The British Masters takes centre stage this week in Newcastle over The Colt Course at Close House. The course was only opened in 2011 with Lee Westwood part of the design team which created the Northumberland course. This is the last event in England for the 2017 European Tour season and there is a strong field heading to Tyneside to battle it out as well.

The two star attractions arriving on Tyneside are Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia and they are the two shortest priced options in the outright market. They are the only players in the entire British Masters field who are trading in single figures with McIlroy at 7/1 and Garcia at 8/1. However, punters will probably be looking at this and considering a pass on both of them.

That is because injuries have been bothering both of them and has had an effect on their output. McIlroy has not won for 12 months now and will be heading off to take a break from the game so that he can get back strong for a better 2018. He is running out of chances to avoid producing his first winless season for the first time in nearly ten years. Garcia has managed only the one top five finish since getting his hands on the Masters back in April, the Spaniard’s season having been disrupted by injury.

British Masters Odds

Rory McIlroy 7/1, Sergio Garcia 8/1, Alex Noren 14/1, Matthew Fitzpatrick 22/1, Bernd Wiesberger 22/1, Shane Lowry 25/1, Lee Westwood 25/1, Ian Poulter 28/1, Tyrrell Hatton 33/1, Chris Wood 40/1, Eddie Pepperell 40/1, David Lingmerth 40/1, Martin Kaymer 40/1, bar 50/1

But Garcia does look better value than McIlroy because he has consistency and has two top-fifteen finishes in his last two outings. The Colt Course will demand plenty of long-accuracy and so some solid consistency is going to key over the four days. Matthew Fitzpatrick looks to be a pretty good fit for this one at a price of 22/1 and he won his last outing on the European Tour as well. Not only that, he has previously won the British Masters as well.

Digging down the odds a little more, Eddie Pepperell is trending very strong at the moment with a fifth and two third place finishes in his last three tournaments. He has been steaming along lately and is certainly worth an each way put you would feel at a price of 35/1 with bet365. Lee Westwood is at 20/1 after a third place finish in his last outing, and South Africa’s George Coetzee has been trending decently with back to back top ten finishes.
