Burnley v Barnsley Preview

It has been a tough season for Burnley after hitting such heights last season in the Premier League. They set themselves a tough bar to reach again. They are struggling down at the wrong end of the table but gave themselves a tremendous boost with a narrow away win at bottom side Huddersfield in midweek. Burnley didn’t get anywhere in the FA Cup last season, that was because they were drawn at Manchester City in the third round. Burnley have a home record of just W3 D4 L6 this season across all competitions. So it has been far from convincing. They are on a five-match scoring streak at home though. The last time they met Barnsley was back in the 2013/14 Championship and the Clarets won both games 1-0.

There have been under 2.5 goals in each of the last five meetings between these two. They met in the 2013 FA Cup third round and on that occasion Barnsley took a 1-0 home win over the Clarets. The Tykes have done alright this season and they sit inside the top four in League One. They are unbeaten in their last five games in all competitions, including shutting out the powerful attack of Luton in a league draw on New Years’ Day which is no mean feat. Barnsley have been very solid at Oakwell but their away form is just a little hit and miss. They are W3 D1 L2 in their last six on the road. They have scored just the one goal in their last three on the road, but have taken back to back away clean sheets. They fell at the third round last season as they slipped to an away defeat against Millwall.

Burnley v Barnsley Predictions

Burnley to win: The Clarets have been just showing enough to get the job done. This could be a tight, low scoring duel, but the home side, even though they may not go full strength, can just edge it. Burnley to win a 3/4 odds* (betting odds taken from bet365 on January 2nd, 2018 at 10:01 pm)
