Burnley News and Form

It was a season to forget for Burnley. One of the reasons that their campaign was so poor was because of their home form. They just couldn’t make Turf Moor a big fortress like they had done in their previous campaign. Their home record was W7 D2 L10 across the course of the season. They lost four of their last six played there (W2).

Their season was in trouble by Christmas, as they couldn’t get themselves up and running. Boss Sean Dyche dug in there and managed to get them safe. They have received a boost of a fit-again Nick Pope between the sticks and Joy Rodriguez has returned to his hometown club. It will remain questionable as to whether or not they have done enough to get themselves into a position of being able to push forward.

The Clarets only averaged 1.25 goals per home game last season, shipping at a rate of 1.7 per game. They have to put a lot of focus on improving that home form, that will be the backbone of their campaign. The Clarets conceded 62% of their home goals in the second period of games last campaign. They did do well against other sides in the bottom, posting a W8 D3 L1 record in twelve such games.

Southampton News and Form

The Saints were another of the big strugglers in the Premier League last season. Their saviour was Ralph Hassnhuttl who will know the size of the task ahead of him. He came in to get them safe and he did just that. He clawed them to safety, but also added a bit of style to proceedings at the same time. Now he’s had the summer to mould the squad more to his shape.

The Saints posted a W4 D4 L11 record away from home in last season’s top flight. They only averaged under a goal per away game though. Until Hassenhuttl arrived, they were a shambles at the back and Southampton conceded an average of 1.8 goals per away game. But survival was all that was on their mind. They got that done. What next?

Southampton have a lot more of a high-energy game under the new boss than they ever had under Mark Hughes. They have enjoyed the arrival of Che Adams from Birmingham to try and produce that extra output up front. They will also benefit from having a fit Danny Ings. A positive start in picking up three away points would certainly settle some nerves.

Burnley v Southampton Predictions

Burnley to win: Just because the Clarets are at home and just because they did do well to produce results against the other bottom seven sides last term, it’s the home win we fancy here. The Saints will be positive but may just come up short.
