Burton Albion v Portsmouth Betting Preview – League 1 April 19

Brewers capable of stalling Pompey's promotion push

Football Betting

Less than a year ago, Burton Albion were still plying their trade in the Championship. They were unlucky to get relegated on the final day and it took Nigel Clough’s team a while to get over the experience at the start of this season but they’ve been in great form lately and, though it’s probably come too late to make the play-offs, can still have a significant say in the League 1 promotion race, starting on Good Friday against Portsmouth.

Burton Form and Team News

The Brewers have won four and drawn one of their last five matches and that draw came against Sunderland at the Stadium Of Light. They are averaging three goals a game with Northern Ireland international Liam Boyce leading the way ably supported by Marcus Harness and Lucas Akins. They still have a mathematical hope of making the top six but would need to win all their remaining games and hope for a freak set of results elsewhere so Nigel Clough may already be looking to next season. David Templeton will miss the remainder of the season having been injured against Accrington almost a month ago and defender Jake Buxton may also miss the game against Pompey but Scott Fraser and Stephen Quinn have been wrapped in cotton wool this week and should be in the starting-line-up.

Portsmouth Form and Team News

Like Burton, Portsmouth come into this game in sparkling form. They’ve won their last five matches in League 1 and also captured the Checkatrade Trophy last month. Another Wembley appearance could be on the cards via the play-offs but it’s not inconceivable that Kenny Jackett’s men will find themselves in the automatic promotion places after Easter if they win both matches as they have a game in hand on second-placed Barnsley and are only two points adrift. Andy Cannon and Viv Solomon-Otabor could both figure at Burton following injury but Dion Donahue and Lloyd Isgrove remain sidelined and the manager will not want to make too many changes to a winning team so veteran Brett Pitman and Ollie Hawkins are likely to lead the attack again.

Burton v Portsmouth Head-to-Heads

Burton are relative newcomers to the EFL and they’ve only met Portsmouth on five previous occasions. Three have ended in draws but all of those, including a 2-2 draw earlier this season, were at Fratton Park. The teams have won one match each at the Pirelli Stadium.

Burton v Portsmouth Current Best Odds

Burton 2/1, Draw 12/5, Portsmouth 31/20 (Odds correct at 1.45pm April 18)

Burton v Portsmouth Predictions
