Rylan remains in pole position but Tricia coming up on the rails

As I sit in my office I can see the snow falling on the trees and fields outside and I wonder how it somehow always manages to play havoc with the integral parts of the British infrastructure.

I must say, I have to give full marks to my wife this morning as she got out of bed half an hour earlier to clear the car and a path to the road. I did have to open the window and tell her to stop scraping the shovel on the driveway, however, as I was struggling to get back to sleep. It’s all nonsense, really, and show just how easy we have it nowadays in modern society. Fifty years ago, in conditions five times worse than those we’re encountering this week, people were cheerfully clearing railway lines by hand so they could get to work. If the buses stopped you walked, or hitched a ride on the infrequent snow ploughs (I actually did that once myself when I couldn’t get home). Nowadays, many people don’t even bother ringing up to say they won’t be coming in. Imagine if the people of Norway, Austria or Switzerland had the same attitude. Countries would shut down for months at a time! Why on earth doesn’t somebody take a leaf out of their book?

Of course, in the Big Brother house, the celebrities have no travel problems and, with little ‘outdoor’ sport likely to take place this week, punters are turning to something which will guarantee a bit of action, albeit most of it rather pointless. Rylan Clark remains the general 4/6 favourite, the X Factor failure displaying a surprisingly moral attitude in dealings with Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt last week, but there has been a massive gamble on Tricia Penrose and the Scouse actor/singer is now only a best 5/2 with Ladbrokes to be last to leave the house.

A mainstay of the drama ‘Heartbeat’ for more than 15 years, the recently slimmed-down 42-year-old reportedly isn’t TOWIE‘s Amy Childs‘ favourite actress but that might explain why she’s proving popular with everyone else. Poor old Frankie Dettori , who must already deeply regret getting involved in such a venture, is out to a general 33/1 to be last out.
