Champions League Tips – 12th December 2018
This is the final night of Champions League group stage action for the season. Manchester United make a trip to Valencia with qualification already secured, while Manchester City just need to avoid defeat at home against Hoffenheim to ensure that they win their group. So really most of the big things are settled for Wednesday’s action.

Plzen v Roma – 5.55 pm
Plzen are pretty much on target to land third place in this group. They just have to ensure that they match whatever CSKA Moscow do on the night against Real Madrid. So that’s all that they have to concern themselves about. Roma are in second place but have no shot at beating Real Madrid to top spot now so there’s actually nothing at stake for them in this away game.

Real Madrid v CSKA Moscow – 5.55 pm
After some sticky moments along the way, Real Madrid have done enough already to have won the group. So they will get a chance to rest some players on match day six at least and take things easy. Their opponents do have something to play for as they have to pick up more points on the night than Plzen do in order to get a third-place finish in the group. That’s not going to be an easy task for the Russians though, even if Real are uninterested.

Ajax v Bayern Munich
Bayern Munich have already completed their job of booking a qualification palace, but they have still to push for the group win. They only need to get a draw out of this trip to Amsterdam to achieve that goal. The Germans have looked better and better the longer the group has gone on. This is actually a showdown for top spot because Ajax will earn top spot ahead of Bayern Munich if they were to upset the odds and get the win.

Benfica v AEK Athens
There’s absolutely nothing at stake in this one so it’s not likely to be a highly competitive thriller by any stretch. Benfica have already locked in third place and will be going over to the Europa League. This is in the same group as Bayern Munich and Ajax and therefore that means that AEK are rock bottom and going nowhere. They haven’t earned a single point yet, so this is about them trying to finish on something of a high.

Shakhtar Donetsk v Lyon
Lyon have impressed greatly in the group thanks to their four points collected from their two games against Manchester City. The French side have to hope that they win and City lose against Hoffenheim on Wednesday because that’s the only way Lyon get top spot (head-to-head record). It’s not likely to happen and Lyon only need a point to confirm qualification to the next round. Shakhtar have to come up with a win in the game to beat Leon into second place. So this should be a good contest. There was a 2-2 draw between them in France back on match day two.

Young Boys v Juventus
Young Boys against the Old Lady. Things aren’t totally settled in Group H. Juventus have already qualified and will guarantee the top spot if they get the win in this game. They will be top if Manchester United fail to win at Valencia. Young Boys are finishing fourth as there’s nowhere to go for them. Juventus have to put some focus into the game and don’t totally get to relax for the evening. That just adds extra weight to them winning.
