There will be no repeat of last season’s Champions League Final as Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid were paired up for this season’s semi-final. Real Madrid, who are edging closer to the La Liga title this season are on target to become the first ever side to retain the Champions League trophy. But first, they would have to get past their biggest rivals before setting themselves up with the chance of landing that. Whoever comes out on top in that Madrid derby will go on to face either Juventus or the surprise package of the tournament Monaco.

Real Madrid v Atletico Madrid

First leg, Santiago Bernabéu: Tuesday 2 May
Second leg, Vicente Calderón: Wednesday 10 May

This could be a special, special tie for Atletico Madrid. They are moving out of the famous Vicente Calderon at the end of the season and so the way that this is set up, they could have a tremendous European send off if they can land the advantage over their rivals. That second leg will be the last-ever European game at the Vicente Calderón. These two met in last season’s final and in the 2014 final as well, and it was Real Madrid who came out on top in both of those. They also edged out their rivals in the 2015 campaign as well at the quarter-final stage. So it is Real Madrid who holds the head to head lead in the previous European meetings (which have all been in the European Cup) with a W4 D2 L1 record posted over Atletico. Real Madrid have remained unbeaten in their last seven games against Spanish opposition in Europe, with Barcelona being the last ones to beat them and this is their seventh UEFA Champions League semi-final in a row.

They will be favourites for the tie and have a chance to build a solid lead with the first being at home and they are 11/13 at Bet365 to take that first leg victory. Real have taken four points from the two La Liga meetings against Atletico this season. However, Atletico are European giants in their own rights and have been having a fantastic campaign. They are unbeaten in the home legs of all five of their previous European Cup semi-finals (W4 D1) and they have won more games in this season’s competition than any other side has. The game to go under 2.5 goals is a quote of 4/5 and you, of course, have some heavy hitters in the anytime goalscorer market with Cristiano Ronaldo at even money for Real and Antoine Griezmann at 23/20 for Atletico.

Surprisingly, Real Madrid have won just two of their last seven semi-final ties while in contrast, Atletico have won each of their last three semifinal appearances in Europe. Can Atleti give the Calderon the best possible European send-off? Real Madrid are 4/7 To Qualify, with Atletico Madrid at 11/8.

Monaco v Juventus

First leg, Monaco: Wednesday 3 May
Second leg, Turin: Tuesday 9 May

Juventus have won their two previous European ties against Monaco, but there is something special about this current crop that the French club has, which makes this semi-final clash fascinating. Their most recent meeting was in the 2014/15 Quarter Finals of the UEFA Champions League with Juve winning 1-0 on aggregate. The Old Lady are right on top of their game at the moment and they have won the home leg in nine of their 11 previous European Cup semi-finals. In contrast to that, they have won just one away. Juventus have a pretty strong record in the semi-finals of Europe as they hold a W8 L3 record at this stage of the game and they have won their last two appearances in the final four, their most recent edging out Real Madrid 3-2 on aggregate in the 2014/15 season. Juventus are 4/11 odds on favourites at Bet365 To Qualify from this tie which leaves Monaco at 9/4. After the way that Juventus expertly held off Barcelona in the quarter finals, taking a 3-0 aggregate win over them, it’s clear to see why.

But Monaco have entertained and them some. Over their two legs of their epic duel with Man City in the round of sixteen, Monaco fired off six goals. They tallied the same over the two legs of their quarter-final tie against Borussia Dortmund too, so the French club, who are chasing Ligue 1 glory as well this season, have been going great guns. Monaco have lost all four of their European semi-finals which have been against Italian opposition and the French club trail the head to head against Juventus in a W1 D1 L2 record. For all of the scoring power that Monaco are throwing forward this season with the likes of Mbappe and Falcao, they aren’t particularly strong at the back. In contrast, Juventus are immense at the back and blanking Barcelona over two legs in the quarter finals is a testament to that. The Old Lady will look to shut down the threat of the French in Monaco in the first leg and the Italians are 5/4 to pick up the win in that one, with Monaco at 2/1. Juventus are so strong in Turin that if they take a lead back there, it is going to be tough for their opponents to work their way back.

Semi-final records: Monaco W1 L2, Juventus W8 L3

UEFA Champions League Semi Final Predictions:

Real Madrid are still battling along at the top of La Liga and trying to hold off the challenge of Barcelona. Maybe that will be a distraction which allows Atletico to muscle their way past them and into the final this year. It would be brilliant for the fans at the Calderon. This could go to the wire with probably only on a goal aggregate difference on the board, or even coming down to away goals. As for the second time, there is some temptation to roll with the attacking might of Monaco in this one, however, pragmatism dictates that Juventus are the ones to back. They are just a machine at the moment and Monaco’s defence is likely to ultimately fail them, whereas the back line of the Italians doesn’t break very often. Atletico and Juventus To Qualify.
