Charlton Athletic News and Form – Three more points for the Addicks?

Charlton Athletic were promoted from League One last season via the play-off route, beating Sunderland in the final at Wembley Stadium. In the regular season, Bowyer’s boys finished third on 88 points, winning 26 of their 46 league matches.

The Addicks have spent a few years away from the Championship, but you wouldn’t know it by the way they have started life back in the second tier. Athletic currently sit second in the table, only two points behind league leaders Swansea City. Charlton have won four and drawn two of their opening six Championship fixtures, scoring 11 times along the way.

Before the international break, the Londoners extended their unbeaten run by securing an excellent 2-0 away win at Reading. Charlton were superb at the Madejski Stadium, with Jonathan Leko and Lyle Taylor getting the goals. So far, the Addicks have beaten Blackburn Rovers, Stoke City, Brentford and Reading in the league.

Athletic are particularly strong at home, picking up seven points out of nine so far. Last season in the third tier, only eventual champions Luton Town picked up more home points (55), as the London outfit won 16, drew five and lost only two of 23 league matches at The Valley to take 53 points from a possible 69.

Charlton have lost just one regular season game since February, and Bowyer’s troops will be eager to continue their fine unbeaten run this weekend.

Birmingham City News and Form – Another difficult day on the road for the Blues?

Birmingham City have made a solid start to their Championship campaign under new manager Pep Clotet. The Blues have won three of their six league matches so far, picking up ten points from a possible 18.

Before the first international break of the season, Birmingham beat Stoke City 2-1 at St Andrew’s. Despite going a goal down, the Blues turned the game on its head, with Lukas Jutkiewicz and Jude Bellingham getting the goals.

Clotet’s men have struggled on the road of late, losing each of their last three in all competitions. Since beating Brentford 1-0 at Griffin Park on the opening weekend of the Championship season, the Blues have been beaten at Portsmouth (EFL Cup), Nottingham Forest and Swansea, with all three finishing 3-0.

On paper, this looks a tough fixture for Birmingham. The Blues have certainly had their problems away from home recently, and they head to London as the 11/5 underdogs. Can Clotet’s boys spring a surprise in the capital?

Charlton Athletic v Birmingham City Predictions

Charlton Athletic win: The Addicks have been incredibly hard to beat since Bowyer took over at The Valley. Survival would have been their main aim this season, but maybe Charlton can start dreaming of the big time after making such a great start. The home team should come out on top in this one, so back Charlton to win -1 at 10/3.

Lyle Taylor’s goals helped fire Charlton to promotion to the Championship last season. The Montserrat international, who was born in Greenwich, netted 21 League One goals. The striker has already scored five times in six league outings this term. Put some money on Taylor to score first in this one at the tempting price of 15/4.
