Chelmsford 19:00: William Hill offer 6/4 racing odds on Lord Tennyson – 20th February 2020

Fascinating line up set for Chelmsford contest

Horse Racing Betting

In the middle of the Chelmsford race card for Thursday comes this class 3 handicap. Seven runners have been entered for it and they will be battling it out over a 1m 6f trip.

This looks like a really interesting race. Even though there is a clear favourite at the head of the market, there are four others with some decent claims.

Lord Halifax 11/8
Lady Bergamot 9/2
Desert Friend 9/2

Lord Halifax

Four-year-old Lord Halifax is lining up as the favourite for this race. It will be his first trip of 2020 having last been out at Lingfield in December last year. He was a 4/5 beaten favourite on the day there, coming third out of eight in a class 5 contest.

Lord Halifax had gone to Lingfield as favourite following a good victory in a field of 14 at Kempton just a week earlier. He is the 11/8 favourite for this contest* (betting odds taken from William Hill on February 19th, 2020 at 23:59).

Original Choice

Lady Bergamot

Grey mare Lady Bergamot does stand out with some very good claims in his race even though her current form could use a boost. She has won five races from 1m 2f to 1m 6f in her career.

Her last trip saw her come home 5th of 7 at Lingfield in January. Her big claim comes from being a course and distance winner. That happened in June 2018 but only once since then has the French challenger claimed a victory.

Her last two victories, however, have been at class 2 and she is 9/2 to take this* (betting odds taken from William Hill on February 19th, 2020 at 23:59).

Desert Friend and Original Choice

There was a fourth-place finish at Kempton for Desert Fiend earlier in February. The Irish 4-year-old has been successful twice over a 1m distance. So he will need to find more for this longer trip. But with favourable weight on his side, it may pull him into the frame for at least a place.

Original Choice had a very good run last time out. He was at Lingfield over a 2m trip and although he was beaten out, it was by the impressive Mildenberger. Original Choice really found himself a nice bit of running there and it was his second second-place finish in his last three trips. He’s top weight and is going with blinkers for the first time.

Cosmelli

Cosmelli is the other one in that clutch of runners in this race that are all around the 4/1 mark* (betting odds taken from William Hill on February 19th, 2020 at 23:59). The seven-year-old was a second-place finisher last time out which was in a Southwell 2m trip.

That was earlier this month. He has plenty of experience behind him having won seven races from 1m 2f up to the 2m distance. He was only edged out by half a length in that recent Southwell run.

The rest of the runners

Envoy was a seventh-place finisher at Kempton last month. That was over 1m 3f. The six-year-old looks as if he is just going to be making up the numbers in his one, despite having won four times from 1m to 1m 4f.

There’s nothing in recent times to suggest he’s up for this. The same goes for Borodin who was last out a couple of weeks ago at Wolverhampton. He was last of 9 in that race from 100/1.

Predictions & Tips

This is a great-looking race. Lord Halifax will need to find more as he goes up in distance for this challenge and it’s not the easiest. The price on him just isn’t offering enough.

Cosmelli piques some interest however because of his last run, which granted was over 2m, but he was travelling superbly well. He is well worth a look.

Lady Bergamot should be sharpened up after getting a run out before this race, and she has won at C&D at higher class before.

But it is the Original Choice that gets the nod as the pick. He is dropping down in class and gets blinkers for the first time which could just be a difference-maker. He impressed up against Mildenberger on his last run.
