Chelsea News and Form

Chelsea have good advantage in this tie after a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Germany. They had come from behind in the game but the longer the game went on, the wider the gap in quality between the two teams (in Chelsea’s favour), seemed to grow. The result in Germany continues Chelsea’s impressive Europa League campaign this season. They have won 11 of their 13 matches played in this season’s competition, drawing the other two. They also have some pretty strong home form behind them in this particular competition.

Chelsea have won each of their last nine Europa League home fixtures in a row. So they have to be in the driving seat to reach the final now. They had good news in the Premier League on the weekend as they were confirmed top four finishers. So they have no pressure on them ahead of the final weekend of the domestic season, which means that they can now throw the kitchen sink at their Europa League title challenge. It means they should be fully focused on this. In avoiding defeat in the first leg of this tie Chelsea have set a new record in the competition as that was their 16th game in a row without loss.

Chelsea have won five of their nine previous UEFA competition ties after having drawn the first leg away from home. They have however lost three of their last four. Chelsea boast the top goalscorer in this season’s Europa League which is Frenchman Olivier Giroud who has slotted home 10 goals. Chelsea have never lost at home to German visitors, winning six of their eight previous such fixtures. Two of those eight games were knockout phase fixtures, Chelsea winning both of those.

Key-Facts – Chelsea v Eintracht Frankfurt

  • The Blues are on a nine match winning streak at home in the Europa League
  • Frankfurt have won 16 of 23 previous Europa League matches

Eintracht Frankfurt News and Form

Eintracht Frankfurt had a tough time in the German top-flight on the weekend as they lost 6-1 against Bayer Leverkusen. It is feasible that they had some distraction with this second leg coming up. Frankfurt have had a tremendous season in the Europa League this campaign, and they may still be a threat because they have scored in each of their last 14 away games in European action. The big danger man Luka Jovic opened the scoring for them with a fantastic header in the first half of the opening game of this tie.

Jovic is on nine goals for this seasons Europa League campaign, just one behind Chelsea’s Giroud. Only twice before this one against Chelsea, have Frankfurt been involved against an English club in a two-legged tie. Frankfurt lost both of those previous ties and lost the away game in both as well. To their credit, they won their group stage in this season’s Europa League over tough challenges of Lazio and Marseille. They then got past Shakhtar and Inter Milan in the knockout stages before taking out Benfica 4-2 on aggregate in the quarterfinals.

The home record that Eintracht Frankfurt have in the Europa League, home and away (including qualifying) is W16 D5 L2 which is highly impressive. They have won seven of their 11 previous away games in this competition. So it is clearly a competition at which they excel. However of their 16 previous wins in the competition, just one of them have been away from home in the knockout phase of the competition. Eintracht have lost three of the four UEFA ties in which they have drawn the first leg at home. This is the first-ever appearance in the Europa League semi-final by Eintracht Frankfurt.

Chelsea v Eintracht Frankfurt Predictions

Chelsea to win: the first leg trip to Germany on paper did not look to be an easy game for Chelsea. However, they handled themselves well and Frankfurt frankly ran out of ideas early in the second half of how to compete against the Blues. That should bode well for Chelsea back on home soil with no pressure is on them over the Premier league finish now, Chelsea win and both teams to score.
