Chelsea News and Form

Even this early in the season Chelsea could do with a lift in terms of results. They lost their opening Premier League game 4-0 at Old Trafford. They then lost a penalty shoot-out in midweek against Liverpool in the UEFA Super Cup. That midweek game had extra time as well, so that was a big extra shift that the Blues put in. Chelsea did actually play pretty well in the first half at Old Trafford and they bossed Liverpool for long periods in midweek. They look as if boss Frank Lampard is looking for his team to get on the front foot at any opportunity.

So the Blues actually look as if they can be an exciting side to watch. They could use a prolific goalscorer, and may have to rest on the output of Olivier Giroud who was superb against Liverpool. The Frenchman is the 7/5 anytime goalscorer favourite* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on August 15th, 2019 at 8:15 p.m.). American youngster Christain Pulisic was impressive in midweek starting on the left-hand side of attack in the Eden Hazard role. The Blues look really poor at the back, however.

Last season in the Premier League, Chelsea picked up a W12 D6 L1 record at Stamford Bridge, a pretty strong return. The only home defeat suffered? A 1-0 reverse against this weekend’s opponents Leicester. Chelsea averaged over two goals per home game last season and they conceded at an average of 0.6 per game. The Blues finished last season by winning three of their final four home games (D1), each of those victories coming with a clean sheet.

Key-Facts – Chelsea v Leicester

  • The Blues opened with a bruising 4-0 loss at Manchester United
  • Leicester played out a 0-0 draw with Wolves
  • The Foxes earned a 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge in last season’s EPL

Leicester News and Form

The Foxes can be grateful for VAR or else they would have lost their home opener against Wolves. The game ended 0-0 with the Foxes really not getting up to top gear. They have a lot of potential in an exciting young squad and it will probably come together well for them this season. Their focal point upfront remains Jamie Vardy who should have opened his account for the season last weekend. Still, they can look back to last season and take confidence from their 1-0 success at the Bridge.

Away from home, last season in the Premier League, Leicester earned a W7 D4 L8 record. They did have their struggles on the road against the stronger sides in the division. Leicester won just one of their away games against the top seven finishers (the victory at Chelsea). In those fixtures, Leicester picked up a poor W1 D1 L5 record. Leicester’s first away game of last season’s campaign was a tough one too, a trip to Man City which they lost 1-0. Leicester conceded in each of their last eight away games last season.

Chelsea v Leicester Predictions

Chelsea to win: The Blues can target a good win at home in this one. They should be on the front foot and they are looking to play a good attacking game under Lampard. As the Chelsea defence hasn’t come together yet, Chelsea to win & both teams to score looks a decent option for this Sunday afternoon fixture.
