Chelsea and Malmo met for the first time ever last week. Chelsea collected a 2-1 win thanks to goals from Ross Barkley and Olivier Giroud. Chelsea should have gotten a clean sheet too, but crumbled under some late pressure from the Swedes. Chelsea are W1 L1 from two previous ties in Europe against Swedish sides. In this season’s group stage, Chelsea produced a win in all three games, in what was their first ever group stage campaign in the competition.

Chelsea are undefeated in ten Europa League games, winning nine of those. They are still undefeated in the Europa league at home with a W6 L1 record. They have failed to win any of their last four knockout stage games though (D2 L2) in European competition. The Blues have never lost a UEFA tie having won the first leg away from home.

Malmo were in the Champions League qualifiers this season but excited at the third round. They then pulled themselves together to win a Europa League play-off tie to make the group stage. This is just the second time that they have been in the group stage of the competition. The previous was back in 2011/12 when they only earned one point. They took nine this time around and after losing their opener, went unbeaten in five (W2 D3).

This is the first time that they have been in the knockout stage of a European competition since 1986/87. This season in Europe on their travels, Malamo are W4 D2 L1 which is pretty decent. They have earned five clean sheets in those seven games as well. Malmo have never progressed in a European tie having lost the first game at home. Malmo have never won an away game in the knockout stages of a European competition (D2 L3).
