Horse Racing Betting

The 14:30 at Cheltenham on Friday 13th is a 3m 2f slog. It’s a Class 1 running for 4-year-olds and above. For this Betvictor Handicap Chase (Grade 3) it is Onefortheroadtom who is in a tight duel with West Approach for favouritism at the head of the market. There’s plenty of talent on show in this one.

Familiar foes go at it again

The exciting Onefortheroadtom has drawn good appeal in the betting for this race. He was the fourth of 15 last time out from a price of 8/1 and now he could easily be lining up as favourite at Cheltenham on Friday. That last race was back in October on soft going over 1f less than this trip is. But he finished behind both Cogry and West Approach in that effort. What will appeal to punters is that he has been well favoured in the handicap here because he’s up against some highly-rated opponents.

West Approach couldn’t deliver the win for Colin Tizzard in his last outing over this distance at Newbury. He had gone off as the 13/2 favourite but unseated the rider at the Group 3 Ladbrokes Trophy Chase. But he is one of the top-rated runners in the field and with the quality to deliver. Given the resume of three wins in chases and a hurdle, he has it all. He had taken a second and then a win in his form directly before that slip at Newbury. The win was notable as it was a Cheltenham last month in a similar contest. He’s 4/1 to sweep the board here* (betting odds taken from Paddy Power on December 12th, 2019 at 6:53 pm)

Cogry was third in October in that Cheltenham battle in which these three met. He notably had the edge over Onefortheroadtom which is interesting. Cogry is a course and distance winner as he won this race 12 months ago, beating Singlefarmpayment by a head. He has plenty of experience under his belt. In his last outing, he was a 6/1 quote and just couldn’t quite get there settling for third.

Plenty of depth in the field

Rock The Kasbah has produced a form which has been up and down all over the place. He has won four chases in his career up to 3m 3f so has the distance in him, but likely not if it is going to be heavier ground. He was 7th of 13 in his last outing at Wincanton a 3m 1f on favourable ground.

Singlefarmpayment almost got the win for his backers in this Cheltenham race 12 months ago. He couldn’t quite get past Cogry at the end. He now hasn’t won for more three years and you question if another will happen anytime soon. Singlefarmpayemnt was out at Haydock last month over the distance and was a well-beaten fourth.

Contenders with the distance

Dandy Dan and Beau Du Brizais both have distance wins. In October at Kelso, Dandy Dan was the 6/4 favourite by could only trail Mysteree home second by a distant 8 lengths. He could easily be a threat in this one as he has placed in each of his last five races, winning three of those. He’s in the high-class company but will pique appeal at 8/1 odds* (betting odds taken from Paddy Power on December 12th, 2019 at 6:53 pm).

Beau Dr Brizais had taken back-to-back second places before the fifth-place finish in his last race at Wincanton, which was a chase at 3m 1f. The French challenger may well be helped along by a decent handicap on him. He has won two hurdles and three cases of up to 3m 2f before in his career.

Pickamix is a horse who has claimed a distance win in his career. This will be his first outing since November last year when he pulled up, so it just a totally unknown quantity in the field. Corba De Mai is a course and distance winner however and has plenty of chase form under his belt. He didn’t get up and running at all in his last outing at Wincanton however and that followed him pulling up at a week earlier at Ascot.
