Cheltenham 2018 Day One Winner Odds & Predictions – March 13th, 2018

Cheltenham Festival

Tuesday, March 13th is the opening day of the 2018 Cheltenham Festival and the racing action gets underway at the 1.30 p.m. with the Supreme Novices Hurdle. This is a big day for punters as everyone wants to get off to a positive start with their wagers at the Festival and there are some big features with the Arkle and the Champion Hurdle coming up on the day.

Here we take a look at the opening day’s racing from Prestbury Park and offer our insights and tips into each of the day’s seven races.

1.30 Supreme Novices’ Hurdle (2m 1/2f)

One of the big features of the entire day is going to be the challenge of Getabird in the Supreme Novices. He has been heavily backed into favouritism and trainer Willie Mullins has every chance of opening up with a win here. This is a star novice having gone unbeaten over his two starts one of them such an impressive win at the Moscow Flyer. Kalashnikov could be a great option for a top three finish while Paloma Blue gets the nod as our each way flier in the opener.

Getabird 6/4, Samcro 5/2, Kalashnikov 5/1, Summerville Boy 10/1,  Mengli Khan 12/1, Paloma Blue 12/1, Apples Shakira 12/1, Claimantakinforgan 14/1, Next Destination 14/1, Duc Des Genievres 16/1, Sharjah 18/1, 25/1 bar* (betting odds taken on March 8th, 2018 at 00:07 a.m.)

2.10 Racing Post Arkle Challenge Trophy Steeple Chase (2m)

The opening two races of Cheltenham 2018 both have pretty strong favourites running in them. Footpad could end up being one of the stars of the show and he has been hyped up so much ahead of this Arkle Challenge. The field really doesn’t look all that deep really for this year’s edition and that should raise his chances incredibly. Realistically only Irish Championship Hurdle winner Petit Mouchoir is going to challenge but has already lost to Footpad this season.

Footpad 11/8, Petit Mouchoir 9/4, Saint Clavados 10/3, Brain Power 15/2, North Hill Harvey 16/1, Invitation Only 25/1, Kemboy 33/1, Montalbano 33/1, Tombstone 40/1, Asthuria 40/1, Tycoon Prince 50/1, Robinshill 66/1* (betting odds taken on March 8th, 2018 at 00:07 a.m.)

2.50 The Ultima Handicap Steeple Chase (3m 1/2f)

This Grade 3 race and a lot of attention will be on Gold Present who will be going to the Grand National after this. He was up in the Close Brothers last year at Cheltenham where he came home second. Coo Star Sivola got maiden chasing victory last time out, however, the real value in this looks to be on Singlefarmpayment despite losing to Gold Present at the Lavazza Silver Cup. Singlefarmpayment has a great record at Cheltenham and get in the picture at 9/1 with bet365 * (betting odds taken on March 8th, 2018 at 00:07 a.m.).

Gold Present 8/1, Coo Star Sivola 8/1, Singlefarmpayment 9/1, Snow Falcon 11/1, Dingo Dollar 14/1, O O Seven 14/1, Beware The Bear 16/1, Ballydine 20/1, Vintage Clouds 20/1, 25/1 bar* (betting odds taken on March 8th, 2018 at 00:07 a.m.)

3.30 The UniBet Champion Hurdle Challenge Trophy (2m 1/2f)

The Champion Hurdle has extra attention on it this season as reigning champion Buveur D’Air looks to not only retain his title but land this season’s Triple Crown of hurdling. Frankly, the field isn’t good enough to stop him doing just that. No-one is likely to outjump him and as we saw twelve months ago he has a tremendous turn of speed up the hill. With the challenges of Faugheen and Yorkhill pretty questionable, it’s there for Buveur D’Air to create some history.

Buveur D’air 1/2, Faugheen 5/1, Yorkhill 8/1, My Tent Or Yours 9/1, Min 12/1, Melon 14/1, Apple’s Jade 14/1, Wicklow Brave 14/1, Elgin 16/1, Ch’tibello 25/1, Mick Jazz 25/1, John Constable 40/1, 50/1 bar* (betting odds taken on March 8th, 2018 at 00:07 a.m.)

4.10 The OLBG Mares’ Hurdle Race (2m 4f)

Last season’s edition was a thriller with three top contenders in the running. Things look a little clearer for this renewal though with Apple’s Jade back for a title defence. She had her work cut out last year in holding off Vroum Vroum Mag and Limini. She should have a much easier time this year though because she has come such a long way since then and no-one is likely to get close to her. That’s refelcted in her 8/13 odds on favouritism at bet365* (betting odds taken on March 8th, 2018 at 00:07 a.m.).

Apple’s Jade 8/13, Benie Des Dieux 7/2, Lets Dance 13/2, La Bague Au Roi 10/1, Kayf Grace 14/1, Verdana Blue 16/1, Jer’s Girl 20/1, Augusta Kate 20/1, bar 25/1* (betting odds taken on March 8th, 2018 at 00:07 a.m.)

4.50 The J T McNamara National Hunt Steeple Chase Challenge Cup (Amateur Riders’ Novices’ Steeple Chase) (4m)

You have a Class B affair in this one going on a healthy trip of four miles. Any novices five or older can get a crack at his one. It’s obviously not going to be one of the heaviest backed races on the opening day of the Festival. You basically have a bit of a crapshoot in this one which is being headed up by Jury Duty. There is a massive field, prime for some each way betting.

Jury Duty 4/1, Dounikos 5/1, No Comment 7/1, Rathvinden 8/1, Mossback 8/1, Ms Parfois 10/1, Fagan 10/1, Keeper Hill 12/1, Sizing Tennessee 14/1, Bonbon Au Miel 16/1, Barney Dwan 16/1, bar 20/1* (betting odds taken on March 8th, 2018 at 00:07 a.m.)

5.30 The Close Brothers Novices’ Handicap Chase (2m 4 1/2 f)

Also known as the Close Brothers, this is a popular feature to the end of the first day of the Festival. De Plotting Shed is over from Ireland and trading at the head of the pack and justifiably as well. He has already had plenty of backing. Barney Dawn is sat at a much nicer price though and won here last season in the Pertemps. He is carrying great form into this one and at the bigger price gets our nod. The other contender could be Kalondra after winning the Ryman Novices’. He could handle his first Grade 1 race, but dropping back down, can get in the picture.

De Plotting Shed 4/1, Any Second Now 7/1, Movewiththetimes 8/1, Barney Dawn 8.1, Rather Be 10/1, Divine Spear 12/1, Kalondra 12/1, Brelade 12/1, Keeper Hill 16/1, Mister Whitaker 16/1, Ballyhill 16/1, 20/1 bar* (betting odds taken on March 8th, 2018 at 00:07 a.m.)
