Cheltenham Odds 2020 – Is 8/11 odds-on favourite Paisley Park untouchable in Stayers’ Hurdle?

Will it be a straight-forward Stayers Hurdle defence for Paisley Park?

Cheltenham Festival

There is more than a reasonable chance that Paisley Park is going to Cheltenham 2020 as one of, if not the big Festival favourite. Trainer Emma Lavelle insists that he is still getting better. That is a pretty ominous thought for connections of any other horse who is sizing up a Stayers Hurdle entry.

Paisley Park is going to be tough to beat at Cheltenham

After a win on Trials Day at Cheltenham back at the end of January in the Cleeve Hurdle, Paisley Park looks to have matured. There has been no sign of his progress slowing. He now heads to the Cheltenham Festival in search of a defence in the Stayers Hurdle.

January’s Cleeve Hurdle was an interesting affair. Paisley Park put in a big response to having allowed Summerville Boy to open up a nice lead in the race.

But when it came to the finish, Paisley Park responded well. He did exactly what jockey Aidan Coleman asked of him and stormed past Summerville Boy with plenty to spare.

Paisley Park is at 8/11 odds to win the Stayers Hurdle 2020* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on February 24th, 2020 at 23:48). He is going to back to the Cheltenham Festival with a higher profile. He is under a bigger, brighter spotlight now.

Paisley Park is currently running on a seven-race winning streak. He has delivered each of his last four victories from the position of race favourite. He will take some stopping.

Will Benie Des Dieux take on Paisley Park?

What will star mare Benie Des Dieux do at the Cheltenham Festival? She is trading as the 3/1 second favourite in the Stayers Hurdle* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on February 24th, 2020 at 23:48). But some bookmakers have left her out at a big 8/1 shot which is fascinating.

Trainer Willie Mullins has not ruled out her taking a place in the Stayers Hurdle. But will a more realistic target be the Mares Hurdle?

Benie Des Dieux was last seen at the Galmoy Hurdle at Gowran Park in January. In it, she cruised to a 21 length victory over Penhill.

There is some unfinished business for Benie Des Dieux at the Mares’ Hurdle as she missed out on her second title in the race last year, falling with the victory in sight.

Benie Des Dieux is the 8/11 odds-on favourite for the 2020 Mares Hurdle in Cheltenham Festival 2020 betting* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on February 24th, 2020 at 23:48).

Would Summerville Boy have the answer?

Summerville Boy was putting together a good run at the Cleeve Hurdle in opposition to Paisley Park. He was allowed to get in a good position and dictate the race to some degree.

But then the turn for home came and the Tom George-trained charge lost his way. He didn’t take the last jump fluently under pressure. Neither did he have a response to the surging Paisley Park.

That was the first 3m trip for Summerville.

He likes a trip around Cheltenham to the 2018 Supreme Novices’ Hurdle winner. But is there enough currently for the eight-year-old to topple the favourite?

Summerville Boy is currently a 7/1 option in Cheltenham Festival 2020 betting for the Stayers Hurdle.

But that price could be shorter come race time, depending on whether or not Benie Des Dieux enters* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on February 24th, 2020 at 23:48).

Emitom comes into the picture

An impressive win for Emitom in mid-February signalled a big return to form. That was in the Unibet Rendlesham Hurdle at Haydock. The six-year-old looked in great shape in it, too.

After finishing last of six on New Year’s Day at Cheltenham, the performance at Haydock from Warren Greatrex’s six-year-old was bold and keen.

Granted he was helped by The World’s End doing too much at the front for too long in the 3m trip, but the Rendlesham success sends Emitom to the Stayers Hurdle.

Connections have written off his poor display at Prestbury Park on January 1st. They claim he was rusty and hadn’t been trained properly. Emitom is well worth some consideration at 12/1* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on February 24th, 2020 at 23:48). Especially as an each-way option.

Stayers Hurdle 2020 Predictions & Tips

Paisley Park is a star and looks to be getting better and better. There has been no flat spots from him for a while now. Plus with maturity, he is still on an upward curve.

Even though he is a stayer he just never seems to come off the pace and always looks to have plenty in him.

If Benie Des Dieux does go to the Mares’ Hurdle, which realistically would make some sound sense, then that would pull Summerville Boy into the second favourite.

Having just been schooled by Paisley Park, that would likely shorten the latter’s odds of success even more.

Penhill and City Island may not have enough to deny the hopes of the favourite. The latter collected the Ballymore Novice Hurdle win last year and would face a massive step up here.

With Champ, who City Island beat in the Ballymore twelve months ago, likely going to the RSA Novices Chase at the 2020 Cheltenham Festival it is going to be even tougher to see anything but a win for Paisley Park.
