Ireland’s top female jockey determined to outshine the boys

In the post-Ruby Walsh era, Blackmore is certainly a leading contender for the jockeys’ crown at the Cheltenham Festival.

The big three stables last year – Willie Mullins, Gordon Elliott and Nicky Henderson – look certain to dominate proceedings again. Mullins is narrowly ahead of Elliott in the top trainer betting but both will have multiple entries. Blackmore is, of course, one of Gigginstown’s retained jockeys so she has a strong book of rides for Elliott.

Notebook, favourite for the Arkle Trophy, Honeysuckle, Minella Indo, A Plus Tard and Aspire Tower are all fancied runners and she will profit from the broken leg which has ruled Jack Kennedy out of The Festival. As well as Elliott, Blackmore is also a favourite of top Irish trainer Henry De Bromhead.

Davy Russell doesn’t have the pick of the Gigginstown runners nowadays yet is only 9/2 to regain the title he won in 2018.

De Boinville available at 10/1 to retain his title

Nico De Boinville, Nicky Henderson’s stable jockey, did best last year but is a best 10/1 to retain his title at The Festival.

Townend favourite but comes with risks attached

Barry Geraghty, a two-times winner of the jockey’s title at Cheltenham, is very much a challenger again backed by the powerful JP McManus team but is is no surprise that Paul Townend, Walsh’s successor as main jockey to the Mullins stable, is the current favourite at a general 2/1, though it shouldn’t always be taken for granted that he will ride the trainer’s number one hope.
