Cheltenham Thursday 16:10: Bet365 offer 7/2 racing odds on Simply The Betts – 12th March 2020

Cheltenham Festival

Action from the new course continues at the Cheltenham Festival on Thursday afternoon with the Brown Advisory Plate. Or the Brown Advisory and Merriebelle Stable Plate to give it its full name.

There are 17 fences for the competitors to get over in this Grade 3 contest which is at the 2m 5f distance.

Lizzie Kelly took Sirih Du Lac to a win in last year’s renewal, and the partnership is back for a defence. There are 26 runners for this one, so plenty to plough through.

Simply The Betts

There is a clear favourite in the fixture and that is the improving Simply The Betts. He has won three of his four starts over the fences. The most recent of those was at course and distance in January in the Timeform Novices’ Handicap Chase.

That’s a massive positive for backers. At favourable weight, he may take some stopping in this contest at 7/2* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 05:33 GMT on Wednesday, 11th March 2020). He is on a massive upward trajectory at the moment and looks very good.

Deyrann de Carjac

Ben Dundee

Gordon Elliot’s Ben Dundee looks as if he is going to face a tough run in this one. He isn’t and hasn’t been in great form for a while now. His last win came 18 months ago in a beginners chase. There was a decent effort at Navan from him in December, but he looks as if he may have difficulty handling himself in this company, but bookmaker are holding him at 8/1 which is likely to only drift* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 05:33 GMT on Wednesday, 11th March 2020).

Key Facts – Brown Advisory Plate Betting Tip

  • Just 3 favourites have won the Plate since 1999
  • All but five of the last 32 winners were rated 141 or less
  • Just two winners in the last decade had previously won a Graded race
  • All but one of the last 22 winners had won a race between 2m3f and 2m5f

Siruh Du Lac

Last year’s winner Sirah Du Lac has run once since the Plate win twelve months ago. He pulled up in that one race, the BetVictor Gold Cup. He’s been held back and connections have likely been feeling everything into him coming back for defence. Lizzie Kelly has partnered up with him again. Siruh De Lac likes Cheltenham, but this would be some return and is out at 14/1* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 05:33 GMT on Wednesday, 11th March 2020).

Deyrann de Carjac

There are some nice claims for Alan King’s Deyrann de Carjac. He won his first two chases, notably a fantastic success at Huntington over 2m 4f in November. He has been shaping up for this because his last run was at course and distance in a Novices’ Chase (Grade 2) on January 1st.

Connections have had their sights set on this one and he shouldn’t have any trouble getting in the frame at 14/1* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 05:33 GMT on Wednesday, 11th March 2020)

Mister Whitaker

Campaigner and former Festival winner Mister Whitaker looks like a handy prospect. He took his Festival win in 2018 in the Close Brothers, which was after striking at an extended 2m 4f in January of the same year.

Mister Whitaker got himself his course and distance win April last year. He loves a run out at Cheltenham which is where he was on New Year’s Day taking 5th of 12 at distance. Pulled up on a return later in the month at a lower rating, however.

Springtown Lake

There was a very good spring in the step of Springtown Lake last time out which will have pleased trainer Philip Hobbs. That was a 2m 4f success at Warwick in late February, benefitting from a drop in weight after a similar trip at Chepstow last December.

He seems to have settled down a lot in his last two runs but could be shaping up just right for Chetlenahm 2020 at 14/1* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 05:33 GMT on Wednesday, 11th March 2020)

Worthy Mentions

There’s a big field, so a lot to dabble around at. Spiriofthegames could be a good contender for a place finish. He’s found a nice bit of consistency recently and has just missed out a couple of times in competitive runs at course and distance. Seems to like the track.

BetVictor Gold Cup winner in November, Happy Diva makes a Chetlenahm return. Did not particularly handle a jump in the weights for a run at Ascot last time out however in the Bet365 Handicap Chase, but should be a better fit back at the 2m 4f range.

La Bague Au Roi made her handicap debut in the Plate. She can’t be written off either. She recently ran in the Irish Gold Cup and took a fifth-place finish there. There was a good show of staying power there from her and will benefit from the drop from 3m down to this.

Predictions & Tips

We actually like Siruh Du Lac a lot for a strong run again here, just before the jumping ability. Also, this is a race in which returnees seem to do alright in and there’s value for an each-way flutter.

Deyrann de Carjac looks exciting with plenty of weight advantage on his side for sure. He’s going to be coming in hot and could stir up the pot. So he is another in the big field to look out for.

Springtown Lake is the other that is going to catch our dancing in Cheltenham 2020 betting for the Brown Advisory Plate. He just looks as if he is peaking at the right time and comes in under a favourable 11 stone. La Bague Au Roi is a very interesting contender too.
