Formbook points to Notebook
NOTEBOOK has a perfect record over fences.
He’s won twice at premier Irish tracks Punchestown and Leopardstown, though didn’t have much to spare over market rivals Fakir D’Oudairies and Cash Back in Grade 1 races the last twice.
There is a question mark over his temperament with regard to the extended preliminaries as he bolted on the way to the start last time but the 3/1 with Betvictor could be worth checking out if the lid is kept on.
Accurate jumping could see O’Brien challenger go close
Though only five, Fakir D’Oudairies has taken to fences like a duck to water.
Cheltenham’s fences can catch out the over-exuberant but he’ll be tough to pass if getting into a rhythm, though is only five and was beaten fair and square by Notebook at Leopardstown – a best 4/1.
Cash back from Cash Back?
Willie Mullins has won four of the last five runnings of the Arkle Trophy and relies this year on Cash Back.
A general 13/2, he was beaten less than a length by Notebook when on a hat-trick at Leopardstown but, aged eight, is a little older than the ideal for this novices’ race.
He is having a first run in the UK so remains something of an unknown quantity and it would be no surprise to see him tried over a longer distance before the end of the campaign.
Brewin’upastorm has kept his powder dry
Brewin’upastorm‘s lack of recent action can be viewed two ways.
Supporters will suggest that trainer Olly Murphy has deliberately kept his charge away from the racecourse to finalise preparations while detractors will find the negatives in the lack of a recent run.
He ran well over hurdles at The Festival last year and also at Aintree but over further. A couple of these may be too fleet-footed and improvement will be required on his chase form to date so the 6/1 with Unibet is hardly a stand-out price.
Can De Bromhead bring Put The Kettle On back to the boil?
There are two mares contesting this year’s Arkle Trophy.
The unbeaten Maire Banrigh is one and Put The Kettle On is the other.
Henry De Bromhead’s six-year-old has only lost once so far over the larger obstacles and beat Al Dancer and Rouge Vif at Cheltenham in November.
The latter’s form runs through this race like a seam of gold and Aidan Coleman’s mount looks overpriced at 18/1 with Unibet, though this is fairly open renewal with the likes of Esprit Du Large and Global Citizen having a decent chance.
