Chepstow 13:10: Coral offer 4/1 racing odds on Alminar- 17th January 2020

Who will edge a very tight field in Chepstow opener?

Horse Racing Betting

To kick off the day’s action at Chepstow, eleven runners will be heading to the start for this exciting 2m 7f handicap chase. This is a Class 4 fixture for five-year-olds and above. The market has been up and down and all over the place in this one.

On Thursday was Almintar who started to get the backing at the head of the market, seeding a couple of his main contenders drifting a little bit. But still, sizing up the card, this looks as if it could be a blockbuster of a contest. Read our Chepstow racing prediction for more.

Market shifts towards Alminar

As a 7/2 shot, Aliminar was trimmed in the market for this Chepstow feature yesterday* (betting odds taken from Coral on January 16th, 2020 at 2:26 pm). He has won at the distance before and was competitive in his last race. That was the third-place finish that he took at Ffos Las at a 3m distance in November. That followed up on a victory which he had taken at the track in late February. He’s familiar with the distance.

Lac Sacre a C&D winner

There looks to be a big threat coming in from Las Sacre given form and that he is a course and distance winner. In this last race, which was a 3m 1f contest at Ffos Las in December, claimed a commanding victory. That was the third success in a sequence four runs that he had put on the board.

The doubters will point to him twice having pulled up and having fallen once from seven trips last year. But when he gets it right, he is a serious contender. His win at Chepstow at the 2m 7f distance came in 2017.

The Ogle Gogle Man

The Charlie Mann-trained The Ogle Gogle Man has been knocking on the door of success in his recent outings. It has been back to back second-place finishes from him. The latest of those was in a Uttoxeter chase in December at 3m. He was going under a significant weight hike in that one as well and drop a few for this contest. His two career wins were at the back end of 2018, both over three miles.

Other potential key players

Seven-year-old Adherence was a faller in his last outing, which was at Catterick in December. He has started as the favourite for that race though, with very good claims. None bigger than his victory at Taunton in late November, which was over a distance of 2m 5f.

Hugos Reflection banked a win in his last race and has been successful at a two chases up to a distance of 2m 6f. His last successes was at Fontwell and that is one of two wins that he put in the bag last year. The other was earlier in the year in March at Market Rasen. He always looks to have a competitive step in him and will have some appeal at the 8/1 mark* (betting odds taken from Coral on January 16th, 2020 at 2:26 pm).

The other in this bracket of market prices is the Evan Williams-trained On The Road. The 10-year-old unseated his rider in his last run in December at Uttoxeter though. That was after a much-improved touch of form from him when he claimed second place at Ludlow from a 12/1 quote.

Can Big Meadow reproduce Chepstow form?

Silent Steps and Big Meadow are both course and distance winners. Out of the two of them, it is Big Meadow who has the better current form. Although that’s not been much to write home about. He claimed a fourth at Uttoxeter over a three-mile trip in December, after having pulled in his previous race.

What piques interested is his C&D in early November last year, however, delivering the goods on the one outing that he took under 3 miles for 2019. Some bookies have left him dangling as the 16/1 outsider, but Coral have been more cautious and pulled him into twelves* (betting odds taken from Coral on January 16th, 2020 at 2:26 pm). He is only 3lb up on that previous Chepstow win.

Prediction

This is the proverbial wide-open field. There isn’t enough about Alminar to not go digging through the rest of the field at all. Las Sacre is such a lively contender and has been one in the frame as a course and distance winner, but handicap and age cast a doubt.

The Ogle Gogle Man looks as if he is trending towards something bigger with some consent form under his belt for Charlie Man and makes for our first pick of the race at 13/2 odds* (betting odds taken from Coral on January 16th, 2020 at 2:26 pm).

The other is Adherence at a nice 7/1 quotee to come through this challenge* (betting odds taken from Coral on January 16th, 2020 at 2:26 pm). He never got up and running in his last race at Catterick, a strange race in which only three of the seven runners finished. But he was favourite there and his recent Taunton success pulls him into the picture.
