Chile News and Form

Can the Chileans at least make it three straight Copa America finals? They are one step from that. They didn’t look like a force to be reckoned with coming into the tournament, so it has been an unexpectedly strong title defence. In the group stage, they had to settle for second place behind Uruguay, their one loss there happening against Uruguay. Chile took their chances against weaker opposition in Japan and Ecuador in their other two games. Chile won both of those other fixtures. That moved them ahead to a tough quarter-final tussle with Colombia.

Colombia had already beaten Argentina in the group stage and were favourites against the Chilean. But Chile dug in there to get a 0-0 draw and progress via penalty shootout. That is a W3 D2 L2 now (90 minutes) that Chile have produced this year, so again, it hasn’t been the strongest of form. In that sequence of seven games, they have managed only two clean sheets. But as they have managed to do in the last two editions of the tournament, they have dug in there and taken their chances. Their joint top scorers are Eduardo Vargas and Alexis Sanchez with two each. They have failed to score in their last two fixtures though.

Key-Facts – Chile v Peru

  • The Chileans have failed to score in their last two games
  • Chile are the two-time defending champions
  • Peru qualified as one of the best third-placed teams

Peru News and Form

Peru was one of the two best third-placed teams to make it out of the group stage. During their group stage campaign, they produced a W1 D1 L1 record, with their winning happening against Bolivia, who were the big outsiders. Peru’s draw came against Venezuela. Of some concerns will be that they did ship a total of six goals in their three group stage games. In the quarterfinals, they were big underdogs against Uruguay and the game pretty much played out that way in terms of possession and chances heavily against them.

Peru survived twelve shots against them in the game but somehow managed to hold out for a 0-0 draw (there was no extra time in the quarterfinals). They then won 5-4 on penalties. This is going to be the third time in the last four editions of the Copa America that Peru has finished in the top four. But after such a hard defensive grind against Uruguay, how much will that have taken out of them? Peru have taken a W1 D2 L2 record in their last five games. They have failed to score in four of those five fixtures. In their fourteen games since the start of September last year, Peru have won just four times.
