Chile News and Form

Will this be a competitive fixture or will both decide that they will be happy with a draw? Chile have won their first two group games to lead the way. They opened with a 4-0 success over Japan and then the two-time reigning champions came up with a 2-1 success over Ecuador, conceding from the penalty spot. This bright start has left them on a three-match winning streak at the moment, losing only one of their last six fixtures (W4 D1 L1). A draw guarantees that they get themselves that top spot and that’s important.

The group winner will avoid facing Colombia in the quarterfinals. Instead, they would go up against one of the best third-placed teams in the final eight. So that’s an incentive for them to dig in there. Chile have taken one clean sheet in their last seven games, which is a little bit of a concern. Six of their last seven games have gone over 2.5 goals, but this one isn’t likely to get up to that. If this ends up in a draw that will give them that precious top spot. A loss and it will be second place and no worse.

Uruguay News and Form

Uruguay collected a 4-0 success over Ecuador in their opening group stage fixture. They had been on a four-match losing streak at the back end of 2018. But since then they are now W4 D1 in their five games played in this calendar year. After opening with that big win, they were made to work hard surprisingly as they took on Japan in their second game. They twice had to fight back from being a goal down to get a 2-2 draw in the fixture.

Luis Suarez has two goals in the tournament, one in each game played. They are blessed with a pretty strong core at Uruguay, from the centre half pairing of Diego Godin and Jose Gimenez to the powerhouses of Suarez and Edinson Cavani up top. They were on a four-match streak of clean sheets before that game against Japan, so that was surprising they gave up a couple in that fixture. Uruguay have scored at least two goals in each of their last five games.
