They opened with a 4-0 success over Japan and then the two-time reigning champions came up with a 2-1 success over Ecuador, conceding from the penalty spot. The group winner will avoid facing Colombia in the quarterfinals. Instead, they would go up against one of the best third-placed teams in the final eight. Uruguay collected a 4-0 success over Ecuador in their opening group stage fixture. They had been on a four-match losing streak at the back end of 2018. But since then they are now W4 D1 in their five games played in this calendar year. After opening with that big win, they were made to work hard surprisingly as they took on Japan in their second game. They twice had to fight back from being a goal down to get a 2-2 draw in the fixture.

Luis Suarez has two goals in the tournament, one in each game played. They are blessed with a pretty strong core at Uruguay, from the centre half pairing of Diego Godin and Jose Gimenez to the powerhouses of Suarez and Edinson Cavani up top. They were on a four-match streak of clean sheets before that game against Japan, so that was surprising they gave up a couple in that fixture. Uruguay have scored at least two goals in each of their last five games.
