The Suir Valley Chase may have the smallest field on Clonmel’s Tuesday card but it is probably the most intriguing race.
Of the five runner, two are trained by Willie Mullins and two run in the Gigginstown colours. The other represents top handler Jessica Harrington.
While it is fair to say that some of the runners are on the comeback trail, it’s a contest that features some classy individuals.

Bashasson to relish return to chasing?

Bachasson hasn’t raced over fences since falling at the second in the 2018 Cheltenham Gold Cup.
He will have had plenty of schooling, however, and has run well over hurdles this season in a light campaign.
Only a best 5/4, his jumping will be under scrutiny but he’ll almost certainly go close if the obstacles don’t get in the way.

Duty doesn’t face taxing assignment

The sky looked to be the limit for Death Duty after he won the Grade 1 Drinmore at Fairyhouse at the end of 2017.
Unfortunately, he injured himself when falling on his next start and faced a long time on the sidelines.
Whether he will ever fulfil his potential is open to debate but he has improved with each of his three runs this season, including in a hot handicap at Cheltenham 12 days ago where he travelled on the bridle into the home straight.
The ability remains and this is a lot less competitive so the 9/4 with Boylesports offers some value.

Mortal needs to start showing more

Mortal‘s only victory to date came in a beginners’ chase but the runner-up that day was Any Second Now, who has developed into a useful chaser.
Joseph O’Brien’s eight-year-old has not really fired this season and the weights put him at a further disadvantage as he carries a 6lb penalty. Available at 13/2 with Paddy Power.

Discordantly faces a tough task at the weights

Though an easy winner of a beginners’ chase at Gowran earlier this month, Discordantly didn’t shown any improvement on earlier form.
He had fallen in two of his three previous races over fences and his jumping will be put under pressure today by stronger opposition – currently a best 10/1.

Bonbon booked for supporting role

It is possible that a drop back in distance may help Bonbon Au Miel but he is definitely the stable seconbd string judged on a non-descript return from injury at Naas, where he was pulled up.
He was well regarded in his younger days but, despite being lightly raced, would be a surprise winner of this at 20/1 with Paddy Power given he’s not completed a race in more than two years.

Predictions

Bachasson and DEATH DUTY should, all things being equal, fight out the finish of this.
There is a slight doubt about the former back over fences for the first time in a while and the latter ran a lot better than the final results suggest at Cheltenham. Of the two, he makes most appeal at the available odds.
