It was three wins from three for Colombia in the group stage. The first one of those was a 2-0 success over Argentina. They followed that up with back to back 1-0 success over Qatar and then Paraguay. So things are going well for them at the moment with a perfect group stage record and no goals conceded. Duvan Zapata is their top scorer with two goals in three games. The next challenge for them in the Copa America 2019 is taking on two two-time defending champions Chile in the quarterfinals.
The Colombians are in great form at the moment with a W9 D1 L1 record in their last eleven games played since the end of the 2018 World Cup. They have won their last five games on the bounce without conceding as well. Los Cafeteros do look to be a little short in finishing power, but they are comfortable on the ball and have played well. They are hard to break down and there is actually a good balance about them. At the Copa America, 2016 Colombia squeezed past Peru at this stage via a penalty shootout. Actually Chile didn’t arrive at the Copa America for a title defence in any kind of threatening form. They benefited from an easy group to make it through to the quarterfinals. They lost to group winners Uruguay but capitalised against weaker opposition Japan and Ecuador in their group campaign. So they didn’t really have any great stress about not getting to the knockout. Alexis Sanchez has two goals in two games for them, top scoring for them with Eduardo Vargas with two goals each. Will they be able to handle themselves in a pressure situation against a top team?
Chile are W5 D2 L4 in their last eleven games now and they have taken just one clean sheet in their last eight fixtures. So they haven’t looked great at the back and their golden era of quality players is coming to an end. In the 2016 Copa America quarter-finals, they thumped Mexico 7-0 and went on to win the title without conceding a goal in the knockout. It looks as if they are well short of that kind of quality in this campaign. The winner of this tie will face either Uruguay or Peru in the semi-finals.
