After sending reigning Australian Open Champion Naomi Osaka packing from this year’s edition, youngster Cori Gauff raised her stock in the game to a whole new level. It was a stunning performance in the third round from Gauff.

The 15-year-old produced a straight-sets win over Osaka, the power and precision of Gauff having Osaka rattled right from the get-go. It was only two years ago that Guaff was playing in the Australian Open juniors.

2019 Breakthrough

Frew would have known her name when she lined up in the main draw at Wimbledon last year. That was the first time that the American had been in the main draw of a Grand Slam. She made a stunning impact there, beating Venus Williams in the first round. She ran through to the fourth round remarkably, where she was stopped by eventual winner Simona Halep.

Then at the next Slam, the 2019 US Open she was back at it again. She made it to the third round at Flushing Meadows where she was beaten and consoled by Naomi Osaka. Gauff had been overpowered in that contest. Once again Gauff defeated Venus Willaims as she kicked off her Australian Open 2020 campaign.

Can Gauff win the Australian Open 2020?

The hype surrounding the youngster is real. The composure that she shows on the court makes you forget her age. She is fearless, confident in herself and has some ability beyond her years. She has already been pegged as potentially being one of the greatest of all time.

There’s a long way to go for that. But Gauff is now in at 12/1 odds to win the Australian Open 2020 outright* (betting odds taken from bet365 on January 24th, 2020 at 12:41 pm). There are only four players left at shorter odds than that.

Osaka tops day of upsets at Melbourne Park

On a day when China’s Qiang Wang pulled off a mighty upset in knocking out Serena Williams, while Stefanos Tsitispas tumbled from the men’s draw, it was Gauff who was the one who was grabbing all the headlines.

With her win over Osaka, Gauff is the first 15-year-old to make it through to the round of sixteen of two Grand Slams since Martina Hingis did it back in 1996. She should be breaking through to the top 50 after this tournament.
