Costa Rica were superb in their opener, thumping Nicaragua 4-0 at the Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica in San Jose. The familiar face of Bryan Oviedo, who is still at Sunderland, got Los Ticos up and running early on, with Celso Borges, Elias Aguilar and Allan Cruz getting the others.

Bermuda are Gold Cup debutants, but they gave a good account of themselves against Haiti in Costa Rica in their opening game of the competition. Dante Leverock, who plies his trade in Ireland for Sligo Rovers, put Kyle Lightbourne’s boys 1-0 up just before the break.
Unfortunately for the Gombey Warriors, Haiti turned the game on its head in the second half thanks to two goals by Frantzdy Pierrot. Nevertheless, it was a brave and positive performance by the Bermudans in Costa Rica.
Bermuda warmed up for this tournament with back-to-back wins over Dominican Republic and Guyana. Although the loss to Haiti was a setback, Lightbourne and his troops would have learned an awful lot. Can the Gombey Warriors cause an almighty Gold Cup upset on Friday?
