Croatia News and Form – Can Croatia beat Hungary to take control of the group?

Croatia are sat top of Group E as it is. They only have a one-point lead though, so there is still some work for them to do. They suffered a 2-1 loss in Hungary earlier in the campaign, so they have to redress that balance. If they don’t win this one then Hungary will have the head to head tie-breaker average over them. Along with that loss to Hungary, they were also held to a draw by Azerbaijan. But despite those misfires, Craotia’s record of W3 D1 L1 in the group leaves them top regardless. A win here and they will have one foot in next summer’s Euro 2020 tournament.

They are only in patchy form at best though. It is a W3 D2 L2 record they have taken in their last six games (competitive and friendly). They were on a four-match winning streak at home before a 2-1 friendly defeat against Tunisia back in June. Croatia have some great home form going in European Championship home qualifiers though. It is now a W6 D2 record that they have taken in their eight such fixtures. They have, however, only managed one clean sheet in their last five. Croatia have scored at least two goals in six of their last seven Euro Championship qualifiers at home.

Hungary News and Form – Can Hungary avoid defeat in Split?

Hungary would be in a fantastic position if they could pull off the double over Croatia in this group. They couldn’t be beaten by Croatia in the head to head tie-break, which given the right position between the leading three, could be huge. A win would leave them two points clear of Croatia with two to play. The Hungarians have taken a W3 D2 record in the group so far, the losses happening against Slovakia. One of those defeats against Slovakia followed an international friendly defeat against Montenegro, so it’s back to back defeat by Hungary in current form.

Those two losses, incidentally were both 2-1 losses. Hungary are on a five-match scoring streak currently. They have produced a W2 D1 L2 record in their last five European Championship away qualifiers, the losses happening against Greece and Slovakia. They are a side who are unpredictable, but they look a lot stronger of a force on home soil than out on the road. In all fixtures, Hungary’s away record is a very poor W1 D2 L5 in their last eight.

Croatia v Hungary Predictions

Croatia to win: Hungary are not much of a threat when they go on their travels, and that should hand the full advantage to Croatia in this one. This is a big home game for Croatia in terms of qualification and they look good value to get the win.
