Denmark v Portugal Euro 2012 betting odds have suddenly taken on an unexpected context after the Danes stunned the Netherlands in the first round of matches. Marten Olsen’s men caused the big upset of the first group matches, as the opportunist underdogs took down the fancied Holland 1-0. Denmark were outplayed for most of the match, but some poor finishing from the Dutch, combined with some defensive heroics from the Danes, saw the unexpected scoreline crop up. The Danes rode their luck, let’s not make any mistake about that. Olsen sent his men out to try and play their natural game against Holland, and not just sit back and wait to be broken down. That being said, Denmark weren’t very effective in the game, and taking their goal was really the only positive thing and threatening thing which they did. However, the Danes were torn apart at the back, time and time again, and if the Netherlands would have played with just a little more aggression, then Denmark could well have been on the end of a convincing thumping. But they held on to record a tremendous victory for themselves, in this Group of Death, and now have their sights on Portugal.

Denmark nailed their one clear opening against Holland and once that had happened, naturally it was backs to the walls. Denmark are not going to go out and score a whole bunch of goals, and now they will have to go through it all against Germany. The Danes were pretty courageous actually and deserve credit for their win, and now Group B is wide open. The Danes have made their presence felt and will now be even keener to take at least a point off Portugal, while Holland go and try to pick up the pieces in a tough match against Germany. So there is the scenario that Denmark and Germany could be on maximum points, with Portugal and Holland out at the end of Group B’s second round of matches. But can Denmark make a second impact in the group by taking down Portugal? This is going to be just as tough, but Denmark know Portugal well after matching up against them during qualification. Both sides recorded a win in their respective home matches, and the Danes will know that they need to stay tight at the back, and a point would still keep them in the hunt for a surprise place in the quarter finals.

Portugal were eventually undone in their opening match after Germany’s Mario Gomez shot them down with the only goal of the game in the 72nd minute. Portugal did actually have more attempts on goal in the match, and they forced far more corners than the Germans. This led to star man Cristiano Ronaldo stating that Portugal had been better than Germany, and they did give a good account of themselves. Better, however? That may be a stretch. It was a pretty tight match against the Germans to be honest, and Portugal did a great job of sitting back and squeezing all the space and time away from their higher rated opponents. After Germany had broken through, Portugal pushed hard but could not find a way through the Germany defence. That could be the problem for Portugal in this group, finding their way through mean defences to get on the score sheet. Take Ronaldo out of the equation and there is a pretty average squad. They worked harder than many had expected, but it was again, not a tremendously positive approach to a game. Portugal do struggle through the middle of the park, and really Cristiano Ronaldo is their best route to goal. His finishing could ultimately prove the difference against the Danes, but it is not going to be easy as the Danes will have their tails up. This is a game which Portugal can’t afford to lose, so the initiative will have to come from them.

Prediction: The Danes did solidly through their qualification process, beating Portugal to top spot. They will be confident, Portugal will be desperate. Neither are a great side, but you have to lean towards the threats that Portugal can muster, over that of the more limited Danes. Can the Danes ride their luck for two matches running? The Portuguese are probably worth looking at for a 1 Goal Winning Margin for 11/4 at Bet365.
