Frank Lampard’s Derby County and Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United lock horns in the second Championship play-off semi-final first leg on Saturday. The Rams lost home and away to Leeds in the regular Championship season, so the Rams will be out for revenge in this two-legged tie. County are the home team, but United are the slight favourites to pick up the win at Pride Park. Take a look at our in-depth Derby v Leeds betting preview.

Derby County News and Form

Derby County made sure of their play-off spot on the final day of the regular Championship season with an impressive 3-1 home win over West Bromwich Albion. It was a nervy afternoon at Pride Park, but some of those nerves were eased when Martyn Waghorn headed the Rams in front on 19 minutes. West Brom found an equaliser just after half time, but late goals from Mason Bennett and Harry Wilson did the business for County.

Derby head into the play-offs in very good form. The Midlands outfit are unbeaten since losing 2-0 to Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park a month ago, winning four and drawing two of their last six Championship encounters. Meanwhile, the Rams have taken ten points from the last 12 on the table.

Only Sheffield United and Norwich City – who were both automatically promoted to the Premier League – have a better home record in the Championship, with both teams picking up 49 points. Derby have won 13, drawn seven and lost just three in league action at Pride Park this term. Since falling to a shock 1-0 reverse to Millwall back in February, Derby have won five and drawn two of their past seven at Pride Park, with each of their last four ending in victories.

Leeds United News and Form

In contrast to Derby’s strong finish, Leeds United ended their campaign in woeful form. Bielsa’s boys lost three of their last four matches, picking up only one point from a possible 12. On the final day, Leeds fell to a disappointing 3-2 defeat to bottom club Ipswich Town at Portman Road.

The Whites head into the play-offs as one of the favourites but missing out on the top two after a gruelling campaign could potentially play on their minds. Leeds spent a large chunk of the season in the automatic spots, so to miss out at the very end will have been a bitter pill to swallow for everyone involved with the club.

Leeds have certainly struggled away from home in recent weeks, losing at Birmingham City, Brentford and Ipswich. In fact, United have lost four of their last seven on the road. On a more positive note, only Norwich (45), Sheffield Utd (40) and Bristol City (38) have accumulated more away points than Bielsa’s side (37).

Derby County v Leeds United Predictions

Derby County win: This promises to be a mouth-watering game between two sides who are desperate to get back to the Premier League after a long stay away. Both clubs have had their fair share of heartache in recent years, but I can see Derby being the happier of the two come close of play on Saturday night. This could be close battle in the East Midlands, but back the Rams to edge past United at Pride Park.
