Derby County News and Form – Will the Rams hit back?

Derby County were well beaten at The Valley on Saturday, falling to a deserved 3-0 defeat against Charlton. That was the Rams’ first loss since losing by the same scoreline to Brentford at Griffin Park back in August. Meanwhile, it was County’s third 3-0 reverse of the season.

Phillip Cocu’s men were just starting to find some rhythm before last weekend’s loss in London. However, Derby have picked up just two league victories since their opening weekend win over Huddersfield Town at the John Smith’s Stadium.

After failing to win any of their opening four Championship fixtures at Pride Park under Cocu, drawing three and losing one, the Midlands side have now won their last two at home, beating Birmingham City 3-2 and Luton Town 2-0. Can County secure a hat-trick of home league wins on Wednesday?

Derby County v Wigan Athletic Head to Head

Derby did the double over Wigan last season, winning 2-1 at home after picking up a 1-0 victory at the DW Stadium

County came from behind to beat Athletic 2-1 when they last met back in March

The Rams are undefeated in five against the Latics, with four of those being wins

Wigan’s last triumph over Derby was almost five years ago to the day – a 2-1 victory at Pride Park

Key-Facts – Derby County v Wigan Athletic

  • Derby have suffered just one league loss at Pride Park this term
  • Wigan have the joint worst away record in the second tier so far
  • The Rams have won their last two at home, beating Birmingham and Luton

Wigan Athletic News and Form – Can the Latics pick up first away win?

Wigan Athletic head to Pride Park fresh off the back of Sunday’s excellent 1-0 home win over in-form Nottingham Forest. Forest had not been beaten in league action since the opening weekend, but Jamal Lowe’s first-half goal gave Athletic a deserved 1-0 win over Sabri Lamouchi’s Reds at the DW Stadium.

Wigan have been strong at home, winning their last three at the DW, but they have the joint worst away record in the division. Paul Cook’s men need to get their act together on the road, as they have taken just one point from a possible 18. Wigan have not won on their travels since shocking Leeds United at Elland Road back in April.

Wigan have really struggled away from home since returning to the Championship, and they could be set for a tough night at Pride Park in midweek.

Derby County v Wigan Athletic Predictions

Derby County win: As I touched on, it took Cocu five attempts to secure his first home win as Rams boss. Since losing 2-1 to Bristol City at Pride Park in August, County are unbeaten in four on their own patch, winning two and drawing two.

After their heavy defeat at The Valley last weekend, Derby will want to strike back with an important three points on home soil in midweek. Back the hosts to prevail at evens.

Wigan have failed to score in their last two away games, crashing to defeats at Fulham (2-0) and Sheffield Wednesday (1-0). Overall, Athletic have netted just three away goals this term, shipping 12 at the other end. With that in mind, put some money on Derby to win to nil at 12/5.
