Derby v Southampton Preview

The Rams are sat inside the top six in the Championship and they have held their own in a couple of tough contests over the last couple of games. Derby have only lost one of their last seven games played and they have only lost two home games all season (W6 D5). Derby are unbeaten in their last four on home soil although each of their last three have been drawn. But there does look to be enough there to get themselves into this tie. It is going to be easier than last season’s third round tie when they had to go to Old Trafford to face Manchester United. They lost 2-0. This will be their first game against Southampton since the 2011/12 Championship season. The Rams are winless in five against the Saints.

Southampton have had a season of struggles in the Premier League but there have been a couple of brighter moments since new boss Ralph Hasenhuttl took over things. But they are still in a big relegation scrap and you wonder how focused they will be on this contest. Last season they did actually get through to the semi-finals where they were beaten by Chelsea. But this could be tricky contest, especially when looking at their away form this season, which has been a bit of a sorry sight. They haven’t been great in front of goal away from home and clean sheets have been hard to come by. This will be a test for them and they really don’t want the hassle of a replay. But they are favourites and they do have the head to head form against the Rams. How interested will they be?

Derby v Southampton Predictions

Derby to win: It is worth a look at Derby in this one, it has to be. They aren’t easily beaten and coupled with the fact that the Saints may not be too interested here, the home win at 9/5 odds do have appeal* (betting odds taken from bet365 on January 2nd, 2019 at 8:26 pm)
