Will Nadal power past Schwartzman?

As expected, Rafael Nadal has been having a pretty comfortable time of things at the US Open 2019. He’s fired up alright. The first real challenge that he had was in his fourth-round match against Marin Cilic. Nadal dropped the second set to the Croatian there which levelled up the match. Nadal wasn’t looking at his best at all. But as is seen so often with the elite players, a bit of adversity got Nadal going.

Nadal took the next two sets 6-1 6-2 to reach the quarters. So he has largely been in his comfort zone at the event as he goes in search of his fourth US Open title. It has been a fantastic season from him in the Slams. He reached the final of the Australian Open, won the French Open and reached the semis of Wimbledon. Now with Novak Djokovic out of contention through injury and Nadal down in the bottom half of the draw, it probably is his title to lose.

Nadal v Schwartzman head to head

Rafael Nadal has won all seven previous meetings against the Argentine. They have met once this year, back at Indian Wells with Nadal winning 6-3 6-1. This will be their second US Open meeting with Nadal having taken a straight-sets win in 2015 at the round of 64 stage.

Can Schwartzman secure famous win over Nadal?

It has been a good run from Schwarzman, who had dropped only one set on his way to the quarter-finals. That one dropped set happened against 6th seed Alexander Zeverev in the fourth round. After Schwartzman had dropped that opener 6-3 it looked like a mountain to climb against the German. However, Zeverev looked more and more unsettled and antsy as the match wore on and Schwartzman roared back to take a 3-1 victory.

It probably won’t be as easy against Nadal though. This is the second time in Schwartzman’s career that he has been to the quarter-finals of the US Open, his previous one happened two years ago. Schwartzman is ranked 21st in the world and has won a title this year. He took a 30-18 season record with him into Flushing Meadows.

Prediction

There is very little chance of Schwartzman outlasting Nadal over a five-set match. Very little indeed. Nadal is probably fuming with himself over dropping the second set of his match against Marin Cilic in the previous round. He’ll come out blasting and the Rafael Nadal 3-0 set betting should be on.
