Boldmere can take down the favourite in Doncaster challenge

Horse Racing Betting

The 15:35 from Doncaster on Saturday is the Grimthorpe Handicap Chase and there is an exciting field lining up in this one. It has been Worthy Farm who just about has been holding off the attentions of Boldmere at the head of the market.

This is a class 2 trip for the 11 runners entered. They will be taking on a challenging 3m 2f distance. This race is for 5 year olds and above.

Worthy Farm

Worthy Farm was trimmed into the 3/1 favourite late on Friday evening* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 21:28 GMT on Friday, February 28th 2020). So he has been well supported for this challenge and with good reason as well. He has won his last two races so brings claims with his current form.

His most recent success was on a 3m 1f trip at Wincanton having started as the joint-favourite. That was the second win at the track the 7 year old has posted this season. Trained by Paul Nicholls, Worthy Farm is going to be the front runner for many punters.

Boldmere

There really isn’t anything wrong with the claims of Boldmere. He is going as the 9/2 second favourite so is close to Worthy Farm* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 21:28 GMT on Friday, February 28th 2020). Those odds may have been a little tighter if Boldmere had not suffered a fall in his last race.

After back to back wins at Doncaster and Leicester, he tried to make it three in a row in a Novices’ Chase at Wetherby over 3m. Boldmere fell at the last in the Grade 2 chase having been the 5/2 favourite. However, he had been a good three lengths clear when he fell.

Yalltari and Captain Chaos

Coming in at the 6/1 mark is Yalltari and Captain Chaos* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 21:28 GMT on Friday, February 28th 2020). It was only an 8th place finish that Yalltari managed on his last run. The 9-year-old had been the favourite for the trip over 3m at Ascot in December. He was just well beaten in the chase.

Captain Chaos has a patchy run of form behind him. He has gone P2P2 in his last four races, so it’s hard to know how to handle him. His last race saw him take second place in a Grade 3 chase at Warwick over a longer 3m 5f distance, from a field of 13. He hasn’t won in over two years anywhere, however.

Notable mentions

Saint Xavier was second at Musselburgh over 3m earlier this month and that was as the 6/4 favourite in the race. He isn’t a bad runner at all, but the 8-year-old does look as if he is searching for more.

Chidswell is a course and distance winner and the 11 year old has been somewhat steady recently. His C&D success happened in March last year, the biggest win in terms of distance, of his career. He has taken second place and a third-place finish in his last two, the most recent of which was a third at a Doncaster chase last month.

Definitely Red is another course and distance winner coming back for a shot. He is also another 11 year old like Chidswell. It was a second place for Definitely Red on his last run, which was a Haydock chase at 3m 2f in January. He has won eight chases between 2m and 3m 2f. There hasn’t been a win for him since the second of December 2018 and he was brought down early in last year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Rest of the runners

Cesar Et Rosalie unseated his rider on his last trip, which was a Wincanton 3m 1f trip that was won by Worthy Farm in December. Ascot De Bruyere was fourth of 10 over a 2m 7f trip at Newcastle in January and has not won above that distance before.

Fortified Bay is carrying some form having won three times this season, including in his last two. The most recent of those was in a 2m 7f chase at Newcastle in January.

AaRon Lad claimed a win in beating Prime Venture at Exeter in a 3m trip in January. That was his first chase success above 2m 7f.

Predictions & Tips

We are skipping right to Boldmere as our pick for this Doncaster challenge. What he has done recently in pulling together wins at Leicester and here at Doncaster is notable.

He probably would have won at Wetherby in his most recent run for trainer Caroline Bailey had he not gotten tripped up at the last.

Pull that together and he has some bold claims for this one. He may well be able to bring down Worthy Farm, who has delivered well at Wincanton. But can be challenged on the weekend.
