Golden Sunshet can shine at Downpatrick

Horse Racing Betting

This will be some handicap chase action from Downpatrick on Sunday afternoon. There are 17 entered for the contest and it will be over 2m 4f.

The race is open to five-year-olds and above. There has been a clear front runner in the betting market with Golden Sunset leading the way. There’s a strong chasing pack with serious claims behind him, however.

Golden Sunset

There was a good chase win for Golden Sunset in late January. That was at Down Royal on a 2m 4f trip. He was hugely disappointing on his following outing after that, however, taking seventh place over a furlong longer at Leopardstown in early March.

He did make a bad mistake in that race and had nothing left to challenge to win.

Certainly, Golden Sunset is not the most consistent but is being well respected at 7/2 in the betting market here* (betting odds taken from Boylesports at 17:08 GMT on Saturday 21st, March 2020). If he finds a return to form he has every chance.

The Trigger
8/1

Canadian Steel

The form of Canadian Steel has been going backwards. He was at the back of the pack on a trip at Naas in late February. He won a couple of hurdle races at Downpatrick in autumn last year but has really struggled since.

The ground may not suit him. On his day with the right conditions, he would have a chance. It’s up in the air as to whether or not he brings his best. He lines up as a slightly risky 6/1 shot* (betting odds taken from Boylesports at 17:08 GMT on Saturday 21st, March 2020).

The Trigger

The Trigger put in the kind of run that gives a big old nod to a return to form. He bagged a third-place finish at Musselburgh on his last trip.

Now he will be back at a much lower weight than that and has every chance of getting in the frame in this one. He will be cutting back in trip as well.

It could all come together for him and is an 8/1 quote for this contest* (betting odds taken from Boylesports at 17:08 GMT on Saturday 21st, March 2020).

Solar Heat

A win over the hurdles at Fairyhouse in mid-November should have set Solar Heat on an upward trajectory. She went the other way, but there have been recent signs that she too has been coming back into form.

She has gone in much tougher contests against better opposition in her last two races than what she will face here.

It will be a step up in trip for her but has strong place claims at 9/1* (betting odds taken from Boylesports at 17:08 GMT on Saturday 21st, March 2020).

Stoughan Cross

There has been an inconsistent career from Stoughan Cross, but he is more than capable of delivering. He did recently at Punchestown, winning at 2m 4f over the hurdles in late February.

That’s the kind of form he has in him. His last run was at Down Royal when he pulled up after running really poorly in the contest. He is at 11/1 for the contest* (betting odds taken from Boylesports at 17:08 GMT on Saturday 21st, March 2020).

Worthy Mentions

CAPTURE THE DRAMA has not won since an effort at Clonmel back in 2018. The twelve-year-old has shown signs of knocking on the door recently, taking a fourth-place finish in two of his last three runs. He will go off at a good mark and may have claims for a place finish.

DA BABA ELEPHANT has been well respected in the market however he has been badly struggling for form. He really has only thrown together the one good performance since the start of the 2018 season, winning at Sedgefield. He has pulled up in three of his last five trips.

WHYDAH was a faller on his last trip and the switch to handicap may well come into his favour. The fall came at Leopardstown in early March and he does have a lot to find given the form that he has ground out. It’s probably not worth pushing all the way to win claims but could knock on the door of a place contention.

Predictions & Tips

This is interesting because it’s hard to find a lot of genuine claims. At the head of the market, there is GOLDEN SUNSET who scored at Down Royal in January. Although he didn’t win recently at Leopardstown, he ran well and should be in contention.

THE TRIGGER also brings some appeal to the table after a third-place finish at Musselburgh. He put it together really well in that one and it shows signs that he could be in contention for the win in this one and comes in at some very nice value. He is carrying 13lb less than his last trip.

As for an each-way punt then we will turn to CAPTURE THE DRAMA. He is getting on in years, no question, and he is unpredictable, no question. But there have been some recent solid runs from him and is on a good mark for Sunday’s run.
