Frankie Dettori, Joe Fanning, Silvestre de Sousa and Emma-Jayne Wilson have been confirmed as team captains for the 2016 Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, the world’s premier international jockey’s competition at Ascot this Saturday.
This year sees a further increase in prize money with all six races now worth £45,000 (up £5,000 on last year) with each rider getting five mounts as they bid to help their team win the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup.
Last year saw the Girls team lift the trophy for the first time when they claimed three of the six races. Emma-Jayne Wilson, who captained them to victory, is back and will be joined by apprentice Josephine Gordon with Hayley Turner coming out of retirement to complete the trio.
Wilson is Canada’s most successful female jockey having ridden over 1,000 winners. This will be her fifth Shergar Cup appearance and she has ridden a winner in each of the last two years, though it was team-mate Sammy Jo Bell who stole the limelight 12 months ago.
Frankie Dettori is a Shergar Cup veteran having taken part seven times. He missed out on riding in 2015 due to suspension but has been keen to get back to his role of captaining the European team. He will be partnered by two Shergar Cup debutants from across The Channel this year – Thierry Jarnet and Pierre-Charles Boudot. Jarnet rode Treve to two Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe triumphs and Boudot shared the 2015 French Jockeys Championship with Christophe Soumillon.
Britain’s current champion jockey Silvestre de Sousa will captain the Rest Of The World team and is hoping for big things from South African champion Gavin Lerena and the Japan Cup-winning jockey Kenichi Ikezoe.
Only one of Great Britain’s original team are available so Joe Fanning has taken up the challenge of captaining the home team. He will be joined by Martin Harley and Oisin Murphy.
The Girls team is not as strong this year and Great Britain’s trio has been cobbled together at the last minute so Europe and the Rest of The World should be the teams fighting over the Shergar Cup with Europe’s riders looking good at William Hill’s 7/4.

William Hill make Pierre-Charles Boudot their favourite for the Shergar Cup Silver Saddle at 4/1 and he does look to have a few choice mounts, though Kenichi Ikezoe is worth a saver at 8/1.
