Dustin Johnson & Rory McIlroy pair up for charity skins match – golf odds and preview

Skins match set for May 17th in Florida

There is going to be a bit of golf action next week after the PGA Tour backed a charity match.

This is seen as a stepping stone for full PGA golf action to return. The return of the PGA Tour tentatively is set for June 11 at Colonial in Texas, behind closed doors.

But a charity skin match will be happening on May 17th and the money raised will go Covid-19 charities.

Four players meet in Florida

Taking part in the match, hosted in Florida and due to be broadcast via satellite programming in the UK will be current World Number One Dustin Johnson.

The American will be pairing up with Rory McIlroy and they will be taking on the pairing of Rickie Fowler and Matthew Woolfe.

The fixture is a skins match meaning that if a hole is halved then the “skin” on it will roll onto the next hole and so on until someone wins a hole.

The winner of a hole takes the current purse whatever it is at. It may just be the money for that hole or an amassed amount from several.

This will probably be looked at as some kind of test. All staff and anyone at the tournament will be tested for Covid-19 as well as social distancing being full enforced.

Golf is set to be one of the first sports to return to action after the shutdown because of the pandemic. The initial tournaments are set to be contested behind closed doors.

Concerns over golf return

But there is controversy bubbling there about a return in June, that’s because of needing a million Covid-19 tests that will be needed to support the return.

Some, including Tommy Fleetwood and Colin Montgomerie have stated concerns that healthcare workers on the frontline should be getting the testing priorities over sports personnel.

The last golf action on the PGA happened on March 12th, 2020 when the Players Championship was abandoned after one round.
