Raducanu the latest market leader

The SPOTY betting market is obviously one that shifts around a lot during the course of the year.

After the Olympic Games, diving star Tom Daley was all the rage.

After finally picking up a gold medal, Daley was one of the biggest British successes to come away from Japan.

So too, swimmer Adam Peaty who added more gold to his phenomenal career in the pool. But the moment naturally has now shifted.

The current buzz for the Sports Personality Of The Year Award surrounds Emma Raducuna,  after she won the US Open on the weekend.

Just to size up the market, last month Raducanu was around 500/1 to win the Sports Personality Of The Year 2021, then brought into 12/1 when she beat Shelby Rogers in the Fourth Round.

History maker set for big thing

In beating Leylah Fernandez in a high-quality final on the weekend at Flushing Meadows, Britain’s 18-year-old sensation Emma Raducanu became the first British woman in over 40 years to win a Grand Slam.

Remarkably she did it as a qualifier too. In that, Raducanu becomes the first qualifier to land a Grand Slam.

Raducanu’s title success happened without her dropping a single set from the very start of her campaign in the first round of qualification.

In total, including qualification, Raducanu won ten matches in New York to be crowned the champion.

Fans will have to wait until next year to see more Grand Slam action from here. But will there be a SPOTY award heading her way later in 2021?

Could Hamilton pass the tennis sensation?

Perhaps the major player left to make a challenge in SPOTY 2021 betting this year is Lewis Hamilton.

This could still be a huge year for the British F1 Superstar as he too, could make 2021 a history-making year.

A Drivers’ Championship title for Hamilton would make him the all-time most successful driver in F1.

It would be his eighth World Championship.

Hamilton is currently a 33/1 shot in SPOTY 2021 betting* (odds recorded at 15:20 GMT on September 12th, 2021 at Bet365).

But winning the title this year looks far from routine for Hamilton.

He is in a tremendous battle with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, which has already boiled over into crashes this season.

It would at the end of the day, be one of Hamilton’s hardest-fought Championship titles were the Mercedes driver to get it.

One that could, later in the year, switch attention over to him and get him the SPOTY nod?
