Cricket World Cup Preview – June 18th, 2019 at 10:30 am

England are cruising towards the semi-finals as they are sitting inside the top four with a game in hand over any of the contenders behind them. Since their blip against Pakistan, they have powered their way to big wins over Bangladesh and the West Indies. Next up for them in Afghanistan and looks as if it should be another two easy points for the hosts.

England to claim an easy win

This is the easiest game of the entire tournament for England and they should be expected to knock this game out of the park quickly. England were last in action against the West Indies on Friday, where, despite some injuries in the field during the first innings to key batsman Eoin Morgan and Jason Roy, they still eased their way to a massive 8 wicket victory.

Coming in as the stand-in opener, Joe Root knocked off an unbeaten century at the Rose Bowl. Roy is the 5/2 Top England Batsman favourite* (betting odds taken from bet365 on June 17th, 2019 at 9:52 pm). So they are back settled again and that followed up on their 106 run over Bangladesh. They will have one more relative easy game straight after this against Sri Lanka, before their tough finish against Australia, India and New Zealand.

England v Afghanistan Head To Head

This will be just the second ever ODI between the two Nations. The one previous game was back in the 2015 World Cup when the two met in Sydney. England cruised to a nine-wicket win in the match after batting second. England had skittled Afghanistan out for just 117 and then had to chase down a revised target of 101 from 25 overs.

Afghanistan yet to get on the board

Afghanistan have failed to pick up a point in the tournament so far from their four games. They opened with a seven-wicket defeat against Australia and they were toppled by Sri Lanka in a 34 run defeat. It was then a heavy 7-wicket defeat against New Zealand for them and a 9-wicket defeat against South Africa. Najibullah Zadran looks the most likely to do something with the bad and he is at 5/1 odds to put up the top score of Afghanistan’s batsmen in the match. It is unlikely that they are going to get any change out of the hosts* (betting odds taken from bet365 on June 17th, 2019 at 9:52 pm).

Prediction

This should be as routine as it gets. It is a good chance for England to rest some players, which they will have to do in the case of Roy who is missing a couple of games. This is not likely to be a long game at all because of England’s vast superiority. Joe Root or Jos Buttler England Most Runs at 6/4 odds* (betting odds taken from bet365 on June 17th, 2019 at 9:52 pm).
