England News & Form

England marched through their pool stage, winning their first three games. They had an extra rest at the end as their big showdown with France, a battle for the top spot, was cancelled because of Typhoon Hagibis. So England at least got extra break and extra time to plan for this clash with Australia. Head coach Eddie Jones has dropped George Ford who had impressed at fly-half. Owen Farrell goes back there with Henry Slade coming into the centre.

England do have Mako and Billy Vunipola fit to take part, which is a huge boost for the Red Rose. England racked up three bonus-point wins in the pool stage, but the quality and execution still have to go up a few levels here. The English will be defending a six-match winning streak over the Wallabies. However, back at the last World Cup, on home soil, England were beaten by Australia. The changes in the backs has been done to try and open up the Australian defence. Will it pay off?

Australia News & Form

Australia came through their pool stage in second place behind Wales. That was because of a loss against the Welsh. Australia have surprisingly, looked stronger in the pack than they have done in the backs. The Wallabies are throwing 19-year-old Jordan Petaia into the centre which is a big risk against England’s creative and defensively tough 10-11-12 combination. But maybe it’s a decoy and that Australia are going to find a different route through which to attack.

Back at the Rugby Championship this year, Australia did get a win over New Zealand which keeps getting mentioned, but the All Blacks played the entire second half of that fixture a man short. The Wallabies are going with experience in the back row with Michael Hooper and David Pocock expected to be big-game players for them in breaking up England’s flow. Australia are going to be competitive, they are going to be crafty and inventive. They won’t flinch at being underdogs in this clash.

England v Australia Prediction

Australia have not looked good in the backs at all and that is where England could expose them the most. Eddie Jones has made a big call in dropping Ford to be able to get his preferred centres of Farrell, Manu Tuilagi and Henry Slade together, which is both formidable in attack and defence. England to win.
