An old rivalry renewed

With England v Germany Euro 2020 betting to look forward to, we look at some of the latest odds, as well as the last three competitive fixtures between the two rivals.

UEFA Euro ‘96

June 26th, 1996

There was nothing but drama when England and Germany met for the first time in the European Championships.

That was a semi-final fixture at Euro 1996.

England got themselves off to a flyer, with Alan Shearer netting in the third minute at Wembley.

But England couldn’t build on that and the Germans worked their way back into the match. The game went through normal time and extra time at 1-1.

That meant the dreaded penalty shoot-out.

England had already been through one against Spain in the quarter-finals. This one didn’t go the way of the Three Lions.

The Germans were perfect with all of their kicks, but England’s downfall came with current England boss Gareth Southgate missing.

UEFA Euro 2000

June 27th, 2000, Belgium

Slightly less memorable than that meeting four years earlier. England met Germany at Euro 2000 as well.

That was in the Group Stage and England claimed the 1-0 victory in Charleroi, Belgium thanks to a second-half goal from Alan Shearer.

That gave England a huge lift as they had opened the group stage with a loss against Portugal.

But things fell apart with England losing 2-3 against Romania in their final group stage match, failing to qualify.

2010 FIFA World Cup

June 27th, 2010, Bloemfontein

England and Germany met for a high-profile Round of 16 match at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

The Three Lions had stuttered through the group stage with a W1 D2 record, finishing behind the USA.

England went into the game full of hope of course, but that was quickly unravelled. The Three Lions lost 5-1, their biggest ever loss in a World Cup fixture.

There was drama during the match with Frank Lampard having a shot that clearly crossed the line, but the goal wasn’t given.

England’s Euro 2020 Group Stage campaign

Despite having the home advantage at Wembley, England have looked tired and flat so far at the Euros.

Their best performance came in a 1-0 opening win over Croatia, on paper their hardest game of the campaign.

But then a dour 0-0 draw against Scotland and a lacklustre 1-0 win over the Czech Republic helped England through as group winners.

But a lack of any serious threat in the final third will be of concern to England fans.

Star striker Harry Kane has barely had a kick of the ball, with both of England’s goals coming from Raheem Sterling.

The one positive of course is that the Three Lions haven’t conceded a goal yet.

Our betting prediction:
England to Win
6/4

England’s current form

England are undefeated in their last nine fixtures, winning eight of those. In that span of games, they have conceded just one goal as well.

England are 6/4 to beat Germany in the match outright* (odds recorded at 03:09 GMT on June 24th, 2021 at Boylesports)

So their form, defensively at least puts them in good stead. But going back to the lack of scoring that they have shown so far, that is a big concern.

England haven’t scored more than one goal in any of their last five games. Also, they have failed to score in three of their last four against Germany.

Key Facts – England v Germany Betting Tip

  • England have failed to score in three of their last four against Germany
  • Germany have lost one of their last five against England (W3 D1)
  • Five of the last eight meetings have gone over 2.5 goals
  • England have lost their last three at Wembley against Germany by a 1 goal margin

Germany’s Euro 2020 Group Stage campaign

It is hard to know what is to come from Germany really. Their group stage performances were all over the place.

They played decently enough in an opening 1-0 loss against France, just lacking a bit of a physical presence at the end of the day.

Germany then found themselves 1-0 down against Portugal and heading out of the competition. But then Die Mannschaft put on a fantastic attacking performance to win 4-2.

Then they needed a late equaliser to pull out a 2-2 draw against Hungary, twice falling behind in the fixture.

The positive for them is that they have come up with six goals in their last two games. But they have been all over the place at the back.

Germany have not managed a clean sheet in any of their last six games. So that’s where they could be vulnerable.

If England can find any kind of attacking mojo to actually get at them.

Key Facts – England v Germany Betting Tip

  • England have 8 clean sheets in their last 9 games
  • Germany have no clean sheets in their last eight games
  • England have not scored more than one goal in any of their last five internationals
  • Germany have scored in all but one of their last eight fixtures

Germany’s current form

The current form of Germany has been a little patchier to be fair. They are W2 D2 L2 in their last six, so it’s hard to know what is coming from them.

Germany are 21/10 to win in 90 minutes against England* (odds recorded at 03:09 GMT on June 24th, 2021 at Boylesports).

Looking back a little further they have won only four of their last nine.

Back in the Nations League in November, Germany were hammered 6-0 by Spain and then in March this year lost to North Macedonia in the World Cup Qualifiers.

England v Germany Betting Method of Victory

England v Germany Predictions

This could all depend on what Germany turns up. They are certainly not a big physical, efficient force that they have been known as on the World stage.

They have looked a little more competent in front of goal than England have.

But there is a sense that if England gets going as an attacking unit, they could easily open up the German defence.

This could be a high-scoring game, something not too common in the knockout stages of a major tournament.

The extra solidity in defence that England have could make all the difference. England to win at 6/4* (odds recorded at 03:09 GMT on June 24th, 2021 at Boylesports)
