England v New Zealand Preview – 10th November 2018 – 3 pm

The toughest job in the world of rugby faces England at Twickenham on the weekend. Trying to beat New Zealand. The Red Rose will be looking to build on a narrow 12-11 home win over South Africa last weekend which kicked off their autumn action. In the end that was a miracle that England held out for the win in that game against the Boks but it will at least have given them confidence after a poor run of results.

England

It hasn’t been a great 2018 for England to be fair and with the World Cup coming up next year that is a concern. They are W4 L5 for the calendar year and badly misfired in their Six Nations title defence, suffering three straight losses having opened with back to back wins over Italy and Wales. Still, they have won their last two now, both against South Africa. They haven’t been overly convincing wins and there still looks to be problems for boss Eddie Jones to sort out.

But wins can breed confidence and they are not always going to go out and win in style. Sometimes those gritty wins in the face of adversity, like it was last weekend against the Boks, can do a lot for a team’s confidence. To their credit, England’s defence in that match probably played better than has done at any other point during 2018.

They looked organised and although it was desperate stuff at times they managed to keep South Africa at bay for the large part.It probably won’t be as easy against New Zealand on the weekend though of course. An England +14 handicap, for example, is at 11/10 odds* (betting odds taken on November 9th, 2018 at 3:48 pm).

Considering their lack of form this year, these Autumn Tests (they will face Australia on the 24th) are vitally important to England’s progress. Chris Ashton returns to the fold after a long absence in an England shirt and he is at 8/5 in the anytime try scorer market* (betting odds taken on November 9th, 2018 at 3:34 pm).

New Zealand

The All Blacks won the Rugby Championship yet again this year but it wasn’t perfect record from them, losing against South Africa along the way in Wellington. However, they are on a four-match winning streak since then and the defeat against the Boks is their only loss this calendar year. They warmed up for this England test with a thumping 69 – 31 win over Japan out in Tokyo, after being Australia in Yokohama at the end of October.

They are still the best in the world, still, the ones to beat and their backline just looks as exciting as every with Sonny Bill Williams at inside-centre, with Jack Goodhue joining him in the middle of the backs and Damian McKenzie as Full Back.

This will be New Zealand first game at Twickenham since they took a three-point win over England back in 2014. They have Beauden Barrett in there, arguably the best player in the world along (although he could well be out-kicked by Owen Farrell) with the likes of Ardie Savea, Keiran Rein, Rieko Ioane and it is a formidable line up that they are putting out.

Prediction

England had that famous 2012 win over New Zealand but is five straight wins for the All Blacks over the Red Rose since then. Only one of those five successes for New Zealand have been by a margin of more than eight points, do England have had a knack of sticking in there against them. But you have to bear in mind how slack England’s defensive discipline has been this year. It was much better against South Africa, but the England +14 handicap looks great value.
