Epsom Derby 2020 favourite English King drifts to 3/1 odds after stall one draw

Bookies start to go against English King after hoodoo draw in stall one

Horse Racing Betting

So the interesting movements in the Epsom Derby odds for the 2020 renewal have happened. The draw for the Investec Derby was made on Thursday and there could not have been a worse outcome for market leader ENGLISH KING.

The Ed Walker-trained favourite will be going from stall one, a significant enough draw for bookmakers across the board to let him go on the drift.

Low return from stall one in the Derby

Just three runners have managed to win the classic from stall one.

So the weight of history is clearly against English King who is currently a 3/1 quote with William Hill* (betting odds taken from William Hill at 03:41 GMT on Friday 3rd July 2020).

So jockey Frankie Dettori is going to have his work cut out on English Key without question having drawn the inside berth.

Other key contenders get low draws

English King wasn’t the only one of the main contenders to get a poor draw. MOGUL and PYLEDRIVER will go from stall two and three respectively on the Downs on Saturday.

That could be a key thing for punters looking at Epsom Derby odds as in the last 20 years, only one winner has come out of the lowest three stalls in the classic. That was New Approach in 2008.

So that really throws the Epsom Derby odds to a new place.

Mogul gets Moore and a chop in Epsom Derby odds

Even though he had taken a narrow draw, Mogul saw his price chopped down to 9/2 on Thursday after a confirmation that Ryan Moore was booked for the ride.

He was last seen at Royal Ascot taking a fourth-place finish in the King Edward, behind winner Kameko.

2000 Guineas Winner Kameko further in the frame for Derby success?

In general, the draws for English King and Mogul may perhaps have punters sizing up the chance of 2000 Guineas winner Kameko at 4/1* (betting odds taken from William Hill at 03:41 GMT on Friday 3rd July 2020).

Kameko, trained by Andrew Balding and ridden by Oisin Murphy, is on for a historic double.

But there have been question marks about how well he will handle the undulating track at Epsom Downs.

But punters will now have to chew on whether or not the draw will pull him further into the frame.

Kameko goes from stall eleven. He is rated highly enough and has a Group level score behind him, usually a key pointer for a Derby winner.

Epsom Derby odds hints at a wide-open race

This year’s Derby is now looking wide open. You have two of the top jockeys in Frankie Dettori and Ryan Moore right on the inside with such tough draws.

But the markets suggest that punters are little more convinced about the latter on Mogul after Moore has kept faith with him.

On Thursday evening both RUSSIAN EMPEROR at 13/2 and VATICAN CITY at 9/1 had shortened Epsom Derby odds as they will be lining up in the middle of the stalls* (betting odds taken from William Hill at 03:41 GMT on Friday 3rd July 2020).

Ascot winner Russian Emperor could be a key contender in this field with Vatican City on the radar after an impressive second place at the Irish 2000 Guineas.
