Epsom Derby Betting 2019 Odds & Tips

Can Sir Dragonet be stopped at Epsom Downs?

Horse Racing Betting

The Epsom Derby, also known as the Investec Derby is a group 1 flat horse race. This is a huge fixture on the British Racing calendar and it is held annually on the first weekend of June. It is one of the famous Classics of British Racing along with the 1,000 Guineas, 2,000 Guineas, The Derby, The Oaks and the St Leger.

The Derby is the middle leg of the famous Triple Crown, with the 2,000 Guineas and the St Leger Stakes sandwiching it. Because of the demanding nature of the races, particularly the final leg, it is rare that any owners/trainers push a horse to pursue the Triple Crown.

The Investec Derby, held at the Epsom Downs in Surrey is the richest horse race in Britain and it is open to three-year-olds.

So this year’s renewal will be taking centre stage on June 1st and heading the field as the 3/1 favourite is the MBNA Chester Vase winner Sir Dragonet* (Betting odds from bet365 on May 27th, 2019 at 11:25 pm).

So it is Sir Dragonet heading up the field for the 2019 Epsom Derby. It was the impressive run at the Chester Stakes that really projected Aiden O’Brien’s charge into the Derby limelight. Sir Dragonet, in just his second start, took an eight-length win over Norway at Chester to make it two wins from two in his shot flat career. He had gone off at 13/2 odds in the Chase Vase, following his 14/1 victory at Tipperary in April.

Sir Dagonet has Derby pedigree in his blood. Literally. He was sired by Camelot who was the 2012 Derby Winner. Camelot also took wins in the 2,000 Guineas and the Irish Derby. Camelot himself was sired by Montjeu. Montjeu was the sire of four individual Derby winners. So there’s that. Sir Dragonet was supplemented (paid to gain late entry) to the tune of £85,000. That’s a huge chunk on money, but given the prize money of over a million, it’s a drop in the ocean.

Telecaster supplemented too

Also supplemented for the race was Telecaster who is at 11/2 for the run* (Betting odds from bet365 on May 27th, 2019 at 11:25 pm). The colt is rapidly improving with back to back wins under his belt. After taking second in his first flat outing at Doncaster in mid-March, a month later he was taking a 9-length win at Windsor. That was followed up by a win in York in mid-May. He could be a major threat in the race for trainer Hughie Morrison.

Aiden O’Brien, along with the favourite Sir Dragonet also has Broome, the second favourite and Anthony Van Dyke as decent challengers in the race as well. They have both won recently as well with Broome taking a Leopardstown success while Anthony Van Dyck got his win at Lingfield. Ballydoyle stablemates of Sir Dragonet going in the race are Japan, Circus Maximus, Cape of Good Hope, Norway and Sovereign.

Bangkok showing well

Bangkok has been showing up well and has been well supported this week in the Derby betting market. Trained by Andrew Balding, he has come on really well in 2019 posting back to back wins. The first of those was at Doncaster over Telecaster, and Bangkok had gone as the even-money favourite. He followed that in mid-April with a win at Sandown over Technician. He has come into 8/1 and will have appeal for punters* (Betting odds from bet365 on May 27th, 2019 at 11:25 pm).

Epsom Derby Betting Tips & Predictions

This should be a fantastic spectacle. You simply cannot ignore the supplemented Sir Dragonet coming in this week. That, of course, means Aiden O’Brien is more than pumped about his chances of walking off with this exciting Classic. The ground is likely to be quick at the Downs on Saturday with warm temperatures really drying up the course.

Sir Dragonet has such a wonderful turn of speed but his position as the 3/1 favourite would come under scrutiny because he would be untested in such quick conditions* (Betting odds from bet365 on May 27th, 2019 at 11:25 pm). He’s walked straight in as the one to beat really. It is fun to think that it’s O’Brien’s other challengers who are among the most likely to upset the favourite.

A pass on Broome and Anthony Van Dyck

However, in our Epsom Derby betting tips and predictions, we are going to skip past both Broome and Anthony Van Dyck. The sole reason for that will be that neither of them really looked in great shape during their trials for the race, despite taking wins. Basically, they look beatable in such a high profile, highly competitive race amongst some fantastic company.

Telecaster is an interesting one especially after the win at the Dante. There has been plenty of support for him this week and that is putting a little bit of extra pressure on him to deliver. Were he to get the victory then it would give trainer Hughie Morrison the biggest win of his career. This is a horse not to be overlooked. If he was coming from a bigger stable he would likely be a lot shorter in the odds in our opinion. He’s going to go in as one of our tips at 11/2 in the outright winner maket in 2019 Derby betting* (Betting odds from bet365 on May 27th, 2019 at 11:25 pm).

Bangkok is our interesting candidate to make a charge hereat the win. He beat Telecaster at Doncaster in March and improved even from that run in his next race. He looks so much stronger coming back from his break over the winter and looks in pretty good shape to make a run at the title in this one. He was still out at 9/1 odds with Ladbrokes at the time of writing, adding a little extra value on his chances on this step up in trip* (Betting odds from Ladbrokes on May 27th, 2019 at 11:25 pm). It’s good enough for an each way punt.

Japan piques interest

There’s international flavour with the names of runners in this one, and Japan piques a bit of interest at the 10/1 odds available* (Betting odds from bet365 on May 27th, 2019 at 11:25 pm). Japan took back to back wins in September last year in a hectic month which contained three races for him. His renewal this year saw him step out at the Dante at York where was 4th of 8 behind Telecaster. That wasn’t quite the performance expected from him and has better in his arsenal.

Another runner sitting around that nice each way mark of 12/1 is Madhmoon* (Betting odds from bet365 on May 27th, 2019 at 11:25 pm) who took that two and half a length victory over Broome in the Champions Juvenile Stakes at Leopardstown. He had a penalty on his back when taking second to Never No More back at Leopardstown in April and was well positioned in his 2000 Guineas at Newmarket. It’s a step up in trip for him, and will probably settle back in a solid 1 and a quarter-miler. But still, it’s another who could make a decent run at a place finish.

Guide and strategies for Horse Racing Betting

Certainly, when you get to those longer priced runners like Japan and Bangkok, who have decent claims at Epsom Downs, they are worth eying up.
