French to challenge for the title

Sports Betting

The 40th edition of the EuroBasket is with us and this will now be held every four years from here on out instead of bi-annually. The importance of the tournament isn’t just about claiming the title, but there are qualification spots from the tournament up for grabs for the FIBA BAsketball World Cup as well. The tournament brings together the top 24 nations from across Europe and this year’s edition is being hosted by four different countries. There will be games going across Finland, Israel, Romania and Turkey and one group is played in each country in the first round.

Spain are heading back to the championships as the reigning champions after an 80-63 victory in the final over Lithuania two years ago. That was their third EuroBasket title in the last four editions of the tournament. They are the clear force in the tournament once again and they are trading at 11/10 in the outright favourite market with Coral. Only two other nations are coming in under double figures ahead of the tournament with Serbia at 5/1 and France at 6/1.

EuroBasket Group A Preview

France 4/6, Greece 5/2, Slovenia 6/1, Poland 25/1, Finland 28/1, Iceland 200/1

France won the tournament back in 2013 and took third place two years ago as well. They took third place at the World Cup in 2014 as well. So they have shown up well in recent events and they are one of the top seeds for the tournament. Without question, their closest challenger in the group should be the Greeks and then things start looking a little bit easier for the French to make progress through to the knockout stages. Greece haven’t been in the final four in any of the last three editions and may come up short in challenging France for supremacy in this one but can actually make a challenge if the knockout draw is kind to them.

EuroBasket Group B Preview

Lithuania 4/6, Italy 7/2, Germany 8/1, Israel 10/1, Georgia 15/1, Ukraine 33/1

Most groups are easy to call but there could be a tight battle between Lithuania and Italy in this one. Lithuanian are no mugs at this and they have finished runners up in the last two editions of the tournament. They have won the event three times before and have certainly been knocking on the door again. They also earned fourth place at the 2014 World Cup as well. Italy didn’t get anywhere in the World Cup and they haven’t been in the final four at a EuroBasket since a third place finish in 2003, but a positive start could see them get momentum going to make the knockout stage, but they are unlikely to win the group over Lithuania.

EuroBasket Group C Preview

Spain 1/3, Croatia 3/1, Montenegro 15/1, Czech Republic 28/1, Hungary 100/1, Romania 250/1

This will be the easiest of the group to call. Spain are odds-on favourites here with Coral and there’s no reason not to back them to come through five wins from five. As with any side, they may have a challenge along the way, which will most likely be from Croatia, but they have such depth and are carrying such form, that Spain should prevail here. So you are looking at a scrap for second place and with Croatia having that much more experience, it will likely be them. Spain will be hungry to make up for their disappointments at the 2014 World Cup when they were knocked out in the quarters by France.

EuroBasket Group D Preview

Serbia 4/6, Turkey 2/1, Latvia 10/1, Russia 12/1, Belgium 80/1, Great Britain 100/1

Serbia had a great run two years ago to land a fourth place finish, and they are going as one of the top seeds this time around. They finished as runners up to the United States let’s not forget at the 2014 World Cup as well. There is just not reason enough to think about opposing them because Turkey just haven’t been at the races for a fair while now although they did make the quarters at the 2014 World Cup. Unfortunately for Great Britain they are pretty much just going to be making up the numbers in the group. Latvia are capable of springing a surprise and grabbing second.

EuroBasket 2017 Top Seeds

  1. Spain, Lithuania, France, Serbia
  2. Greece, Italy, Czech Republic, Latvia
  3. Croatia, Israel, Turkey, Finland
  4. Russia, Slovenia, Hungary, Georgia
  5. Germany, Belgium, Poland, Montenegro
  6. Iceland, Great Britain, Ukraine, Romania

EuroBasket Predictions

Looking at the last two major tournaments, the EuroBasket 2013 and World Cup 2014 then you would to imagine that this is going to come down to a battle between the French and the Lithuanians. Spain are a little depleted going into this tournament which could open the field up, despite their rich run of form recently in the event. The outright markets aren’t offering a lot of value on them and so then it’s worth opposing them. France are a very solid unit and are good at 6/1 with Coral and while Lithuania will take the least amount of focus out of the main challengers, they have proven that they can get themselves close. Out of all the challengers in what is a congested market, because the likes of Serbia, Greece and Italy could get themselves up and running, it is underdogs Latvia at 40/1 who are the top dark horse bet of the tournament. Take a risk and oppose the Spaniards with the French though.
