PGA Tour Golf Preview – Thursday, January 24th, 2019

There is a big hitting field lining up for the 2018 Farmers Insurance Open on the PGA Tour this week. This will see the annual first competitive outing for Tiger Woods as he will be stepping out at Torrey Pines. Rory McIlroy will be making his debut at the course.

This is a really strong field that they are going up against and it is Spain’s Jon Rahm who is the market favourite at 10/1 odds* (betting odds taken on January 21st, 2019 at 6:18 pm)

Day Returns

Last year the event finish had to be pushed back to Monday and it was Jason Day who went out in the playoff and got the win under his belt. It was a three-way playoff by Ryan Palmer fell by the wayside and then Day landed a birdie on the sixth extra hole to see off Alex Noren. Day returns at 16/1 to win the tournament and land a title defence* (betting odds taken on January 21st, 2019 at 6:18 pm). Day would become the fourth man to defend a Farmers title.

Tiger Woods

The 2019 season starts for Tiger Woods then. This will be his first official tournament since his famous and rousing win at the TOUR Championship at the back end of last year. That snapped a four-year spell without a win for him. He has such a fantastic course history at the tournament as he has won it seven times and he always won the 2008 US Open when Torrey Pines was hosting. Can he tame the course once again with the bookmakers having placed him at 18/1 to start* (betting odds taken on January 21st, 2019 at 6:18 pm).

McIlroy debuts

Rory McIlroy takes on the challenge of Torrey Pines for the first time. McIlroy was out at the WGC HSBC back at the end of October where he didn’t make a dent on the top fifty. He then churned out a fourth-place finish at the Sentry Tournament of Champions, his last round failing him there really. He is just going to turn up as an unknown quantity in terms of the course. His first US Open appearance was in 2009 the year after Torrey Pines hosted. McIlroy is at 12/1 odds, right up there to win his debut* (betting odds taken on January 21st, 2019 at 6:18 pm)

Other Contenders

Xander Schauffele has opened the season well with him having already put a couple of wins on the board. So because of that, he will appeal to punters, but they will have to weigh up the fact that he has never made the cut in three previous appearances at the Farmers. Jordan Spieth goes into the tournament with no form this season behind him having played three and missed two cuts so far in the 2019 season.

Phil Mickelson is lining up in this one after just missing out at La Quinta over the weekend in the Desert Classic. That was a strong showing from him and it will be interesting to see how he carries form over into this one. Rickie Fowler is up in there as well putting in an appearance.

Spain’s Jon Rahm has had a great start to the new season with two top-ten finishes in three appearances so far. Englishman Justin Rose has taken two third-place finishes from his four events this season. He was out at the Desert Classic last week for action where he was steady if unspectacular with a 34th place finish there.

Predictions

We also find plenty of appeal in the top ten markets for golf betting and this week is no exception. It’s not too big of a stretch to expect Rahm at even money to fight his way into the top ten, nor is it so far Woods at 13/8 who has flourished during his career at the tournament* (betting odds taken on January 21st, 2019 at 6:18 pm)

Some small wagers like that may offer a bit more appeal than backing an outright winner, especially so early in the season with so many players yet to have enough golf to get their respective eye-in.
