The Oscars 2020 nominations were announced on Monday this week. So that cuts any extra uncertainty from the Oscars markets and narrows the field in each of them. In large, the nominations have not had a major effect on the betting on the Academy Awards 2020 that was already ticking along. That’s because there have been some very front runners in the categories.

As is usually the case there has been no big surprises as to which movies and people, in terms of main contenders, have gotten the nod. Here is a look at the leading categories for the Oscar 2020 betting.

Best Picture Category

Even ahead of the nominations it was Quentin Tarantino’s flick Once Upon a Time in Hollywood that was the front runner with punters to win Best Picture. The movies stays firmly in place with favourite to scoop the award in this category. The actual confirmation of a nomination has just strengthened that.

Best Picture Oscars 2020 Odds*

Once Upon A Time In Hollywood 6/4
1917 3/1
Parasite 4/1
Joker 8/1
The Irishman 12/2
Marriage Story 25/1
Jojo Rabbit 40/1
Little Women 66/1

Oscars Betting at William Hill

On Monday evening in the Oscars 2020 betting, the movie was trimmed into 6/4 at the head of the market by William Hill making it the clear front runner* (betting odds taken from William Hill on January 13th, 2020 at 2:32 pm). The movie picked up the title for the Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) at the recent Golden Globes.

The second favourite for Best Picture at the Oscars 2020 is 1917. That won at the Golden Globes (Drama). The War Movie by Sam Mendes is still at the 3/1 quote it was before the nominations* (betting odds taken from William Hill on January 13th, 2020 at 2:32 pm).

The big dark horse of the Best Picture category is likely to be Parasite which is at 4/1 odds* (betting odds taken from William Hill on January 13th, 2020 at 2:32 pm). Could the South Korean movie make history as the first foreign-language film to sweep the award? It makes for a very interesting outsider which could shake things up.

Best Director Category

There has been a bit of a discrepancy between bookies and punters in this one. The bookmakers seem to have always been a little cautious about the chances of Sam Mendes for 1917 in this category. But punters had largely learned elsewhere.

But in a reaction to the nominations announcements on Monday, Mendes has been trimmed into 8/11 in the five-man field* (betting odds taken from William Hill on January 13th, 2020 at 2:32 pm). So punters will start getting on board with that now moving ahead. Mendes got the title at this year’s Golden Globes.

Best Director Oscars 2020 Odds*

Sam Mendes 8/11
Bong Joon Ho 9/4
Quentin Tarantino 6/1
Martin Scorsese 7/1
Todd Philips 40/1

Oscars Betting at William Hill

Mendes’ 1917 is an epic war film which was not only directed by, but co-written and produced by him as well. He won the Best Director Oscar in 2000 for American Beauty. Tracking him the closest in the market is Bong Joon Ho for the highly acclaimed Parasite.

Best Actor Category

This is one that punters are going to have a very hard time with now. Way ahead of the nominations being released, the chunk of monies going down in the Best Actor market for Oscars 2020 betting had been on Joaquin Phoenix for his role as the Joker.

Best Actor Odds*

Joaquin Phoenix 1/8
Adam Driver 6/1
Leonardo Dicaprio 20/1
Antonio Banders 25/1
Jonathan Pryce 50/1
* (betting odds taken from BetVictor on January 13th, 2020 at 2:58 pm)

Oscars at BetVictor

On Monday evening BetVictor were holding at 1/8 odds on him, while others were shortening the price on him getting the accolade even shorter* (betting odds taken from BetVictor on January 13th, 2020 at 2:58 pm).

Given the way that the market has shaped up for some time now, it may be a foregone conclusion. Adam Driver, for his role in Marriage Story, is little more than a plucky underdog at this point even as the second favourite.

Best Actress Category

There is a similar story in the Best Actress category for the Oscars 2020 betting as well. It is Renee Zellweger for her starring role in Judy, which has garnered the bulk of the attention. It’s been that way pretty much since the movie was released last year. She got the Golden Globe for the performance earlier this month as is 1/5 odds on to get the Academy Award too* (betting odds taken from Ladbrokes on January 13th, 2020 at 2:58 pm).

Best Actress Oscars 2020 Betting Odds*

Renee Zellweger 1/5
Scarlett Johansson 6/1
Charlize Theron 33/1
Cynthia Erivo 33/1
Saoirse Ronan 33/1
* (betting odds taken from Ladbrokes on January 13th, 2020 at 2:58 pm)

Oscars at Ladbrokes

Zellweger is going to take some knocking off the perch in this one. Scarlett Johansson for her role alongside Adam Driver in Marriage Story is the closest challenger at 6/1* (betting odds taken from Ladbrokes on January 13th, 2020 at 2:58 pm).

Johansson was also nominated for this at the Golden Globes but missed out on the honour. Saoirse Ronan has been nominated for a third time in this category for her role in Little Woman as Jo March.
