Big speech brings big betting support

Michael Gove gave a pretty spirited and rousing closing speech in the House of Commons on Wednesday night. That show of authority sparked bettors into life as Gove was slashed down to 6/1 from 12/1 afterwards, to become the next Prime Minister.

That currently leaves Gove as the second favourite behind Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn who is at 9/2 odds* (betting odds taken from bet365 on January 17th, 2019 at 4:29 pm). As expected, PM Theresa May survived a confidence vote last night, albeit narrowly, and then Environment Secretary Michael Gove came out swinging, launching an attack on his Brexit opponents.

He went after Corbyn and the Labour Party in his speech, due to their lack of support in trying to get through a Brexit deal. Punters obviously liked what they saw from him and it has projected him into the limelight in what is still pretty unsteady time for Teresa May in terms of holding onto power.

The betting action received on Gove saw him come in shorter than 7/1 shot Boris Johnson and the action naturally had a knock-on effect in the Next Conservative League market as well. Gove is the new 9/2 outright favourite there to be heading up the Tory party* (betting odds taken from bet365 on January 17th, 2019 at 4:29 pm).

It’s amazing what an impassioned speech can do.
