It has been narrow margins for France so far at this tournament. They clawed their way to victory in their opening game having been trailing 1-0 to England with less than five minutes to go. Romania then are the surprise package of the tournament in a group which supposed to be dominated by France and England. The Romanians collected a 4-1 success over Croatia in their opening game, a big statement having been made by them. Then they fired off another four goals in a 4-2 success over England in what was a crazy ending to their fixture. Twice Romania had taken the lead inside the final fifteen minutes of the fixture but were immediately pegged back both times. But then they got on top with a third goal in the 89th minute and then in stoppage time to produce the win.
This is Romania’s first appearance in the Finals for 21 years and they have returned with a bang. Their one previous campaign was in 1998 when they failed to win any of their three group stage matches. Romania were unbeaten in their ten qualification matches, winning seven of them. They produced the joint-best defensive record in qualification as well, conceding just four goals, the same as England. They have failed to beat France in any of their eight previous meetings (D4 L4), scoring just the one goal in that sequence.
