France failed to impress in their opening fixture as they managed, with the help of VAR to get a late win over Australia. It wasn’t three points that they deserved on the whole though but they have a chance to drive home another three points and make their way to the knockout phase as they face Peru. There have to be more gears from France that they go through if they are going to end being up a major contender at these championships. They looked very flat and average as they struggled to land a 2-1 win over Australia in their opening fixture in Group C. A late speculative shot from Paul Pogba which just about crossed the line (confirmed by VAR) gave France an unimpressive three points and it will be interesting to see what mentality and character they come out with in this one. The South Americans produced a good display in taking on Denmark in their opening World Cup 2018 match, but ultimately they fell to a 1-0 defeat, heartbreakingly missing a penalty in the game. They did carve out some good chances and looked quick and direct when they got the break so it will be interesting to see if they catch France cold. Peru are actually in good form having gone W3 D1 L1 in their last five games and after being so shockingly poor defensively in their World Cup Qualifying campaign, they have really tightened up. They have shipped only two goals in their last five games so they are rolling along very nicely at the moment and that is another indicator that they could frustrate the French if Les Bleus start struggling for momentum again.
