Froome still only third favouirte in SPOTY 2017 Betting after Tour win

Johnson punches his way to head of market

Novelty Betting & Other Events Betting

Is it too early to be thinking about Sports Personality of the Year 2017 betting? Not really, not after Chris Froome’s recent victory in the Tour de France. That was the British cyclist’s fourth title in the elite cycling event and that is something of a staggering achievement from him. But despite his success Froome is only running as third favourite for Sports Personality of the Year 2017 betting at a price of 12/1 with Ladbrokes.

That is quite a steep price for having landed such a massive achievement in his career and it’s not as if cyclists have been unpopular in the SPOTY award either. Since 2008 we have seen Sir Chris Hoy, Mark Cavendish and Bradley Wiggins but is the award set to elude Froome again? In his previous years of winning the Tour 2013, 2015 & 2016 Froome never even got in the top three in any of them, which seems very strange.

So you could well argue that this should be his year. He certainly deserves it and no-one can deny that. Just ahead of the Tour de France 2017, Froome was a massive 50/1 price to take the SPOTY 2017 award with Ladbrokes but after his win he was back to a price of 12/1 which is where he was at the start of the year, so he hasn’t really been trimmed. So why is Froome out a big price?

Anthony Johnson heads SPOTY 2017 Market

It is all Anthony Joshua’s fault. The boxer is a strong odds on price of 2/5 to win the crown after that unforgettable victory over Wladimir Klitschko at Wembley. That will remain one of the real highlights of the British sporting calendar without a shadow of a doubt and AJ would be the sixth boxer in the history of the award to take the title if he goes and picks it up at the end of the year. Which he is likley to do. That was the crowning moment of his career. With Andy Murray (who has won the last two editions) not having one of his best years, it does open the market up a bit more.

Jermain Defoe had a good season with Sunderland last term and earned himself an England recall, and his popularity with punters has been rising because of his connection to Bradley Lowry. Then there was that stunning performance from England cricketer Anya Shrubsole in the final of the Women’s Cricket World Cup 2017 to help her side land the title. The 25-year-old bowler claimed 6-46 at Lords to help guide England to the title. She would be the first female winner since 2006 in the Sports Personality of the Year Award.

The big outside bet to turn it all on its head would be Johanna Konta. If she could possibly get the title at the US Open later in the year then her odds would tumble, especially after such a good showing at Wimbledon. That would probably be enough to project her into the top three at they very least. Would it rise her to the top of the charts though? The first British women’s Grand Slam winner since Virginia Wade in 1977? It would be hard to ignore that.

2017 Sports Personality of the Year Odds

Anya Shrubsole – 14/1
