Fulham v Southampton Betting Tips – EFL Cup, 27th August 19.45pm

EFL Championship side Fulham host Premier League Southampton at Craven Cottage in an EFL Cup tie on Tuesday night. The Cottagers will want to bounce back after a shock home league defeat last weekend. As for the Saints, they have kicked off their Premier League campaign with three points from a possible nine. Fulham beat Southampton 3-2 in a thrilling top-flight match at the Cottage last November, and this promises to be a cracking cup tie on Tuesday.

Fulham News and Form – Will the Whites hit back?

Fulham have made an indifferent start to their Championship campaign. After losing their opening match to Barnsley at Oakwell, Scott Parker’s troops hit back with three wins in a row.

Last Saturday, though, Fulham fell to a surprise reverse to Sabri Lamouchi’s Nottingham Forest at Craven Cottage. The Cottagers were the strong favourites, but Lewis Grabban’s brace gave the Reds a 2-1 win. On a positive note, the prolific Aleksandar Mitrovic was on the scoresheet again.

Fulham were beginning to find their rhythm under Parker before last weekend’s loss to Forest. The London club had won three league games in a row, beating Blackburn Rovers, Huddersfield Town and Millwall, scoring eight and shipping one along the way. The Whites are currently available at 6/1 to win the Championship title this season.

Fulham’s main aim will be an instant return to the Premier League. However, the Cottagers are certainly capable of going on a good run in the cup. Parker’s boys are available at 17/10 to win on Tuesday night.

Southampton News and Form – Can the Saints win at the Cottage?

Southampton started their league campaign with back-to-back defeats. The Saints were thumped by Burnley on the opening weekend, with the Clarets winning 3-0 at Turf Moor. Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men were then beaten 2-1 by Liverpool at St Mary’s.

However, Southampton struck back with an excellent win over Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium last weekend. It was a tense and tight first half, but Florin Andone’s sending off after 30 minutes swung it Southampton’s way. The Saints kicked on in the second period, with goals from Moussa Djenepo and Nathan Redmond sealing a 2-0 win.

Southampton had a poor season in the Premier League last term, finishing in 16th place on 39 points. However, they did accumulate 13 points more than Fulham. Meanwhile, only Cardiff City (14), Brighton (13), Huddersfield Town (seven) and Fulham (five) picked up fewer away points than the Saints’ 16.

Fulham may be the Premier League team, but Southampton are the slight favourites. Hasenhuttl’s men will fancy their chances of picking up a win at Craven Cottage and advancing through to the next round of the Carabao Cup.

Fulham v Southampton Predictions

Southampton win: Fulham were playing the best football in the Championship, winning three on the bounce in the process, so last weekend’s loss to Nottingham Forest was a real shock. Still, the Cottagers have been pretty solid at the Cottage in recent games, winning four of their last six.

Southampton finally got their season up and running with an important 2-0 win at Brighton & Hove Albion last time out. Hasenhuttl’s side will be keen to kick on and win on Tuesday in the cup. After travelling to Craven Cottage in midweek, the Saints welcome Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United to St Mary’s in the Premier League this Saturday.

On paper, these two sides look pretty well matched, even though Southampton are now playing in the league above. Both teams will be gunning for a win, but I can see the Saints edging this one in west London. Check out bet365’s tempting price of 7/2 for Southampton to win by a one goal margin.

Fulham usually net at Craven Cottage, and I can see them scoring in defeat on Tuesday. With that in mind, put some money on the Saints to win and both teams to score, which is also priced at 7/2.
